“Is water baptism really necessary today?”, “Is it necessary for one to be saved?”. These are some of the questions I had about water baptism. In this post, I will answer these questions and show you in the word of God what is the difference between the baptism of John and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Before we start, I would like to explain our main words. The Hebrew word for “baptism” is Mikveh and the Greek word is “baptizo”. In both languages, the meaning is “immersion”. I would define “Water Baptism” (in today’s context) as follows: Water Baptism is when a person is immersed in water as a public confession of their faith in Jesus Christ. I would also like to explain what the “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” is: The baptism of the Holy Spirit is when the Holy Spirit falls upon a believer, immersing him. As a result, the believer receives spiritual power as well as the spiritual gifts of speaking in tongues and prophesying.

Water baptism was introduced in the ministry of John the Baptist. As revealed by the Archangel Gabriel, John was working in the spirit and power of Elijah. This means that there is a similarity between the ministry of Elijah and the ministry of John. Another thing they have in common is that both of their ministries were about turning the hearts of the Israelites back to God.

But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your request has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John.” He will have joy and great joy, and many will rejoice at his birth; and he will not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb. Many of the children of Israel he will bring back [from the corner] to [loving and serving] Jehovah their God.

He is the one who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, TO RETURN THE HEARTS OF THE FATHERS TO THE CHILDREN, and those who do not hear to the attitude of the righteous [which is to seek and obey the will. in order to prepare for the Lord people who are prepared [spiritually and morally].

Answer me, Jehovah, answer me, let these people know that you, Jehovah, are God, that you have turned their hearts to you.

” And the fire of Jehovah fell, and consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust; he also licked the water from the canal. When they saw all the people, they fell on their faces; they say, Jehovah is God; Jehovah is God!” (1 Kings 18:36-39, NW)

One thing they have in common is that they both preceded him, preparing another prophet after them (in the case of Jesus, he is a prophet as well as God)—Elijah prepared the way for Elisha, and John prepared the way for Jesus. As a forerunner, John’s water baptism was only a foreshadowing of what was to come. It actually pointed to the Baptism of the Holy Spirit that would begin on the Day of Pentecost after Jesus ascended to the Father, after his death and resurrection. Jesus himself was baptized in water. The reason for that is that he lived in the nature of Man (although he was also God) at the time when John’s ministry was still going on. Just as Jesus lived under the Law and fulfilled it perfectly, He allowed Himself to be baptized in water to live righteously as a Man in the state of God’s goodness at that time.

LUKE 23:39-43 AMP) If water baptism was necessary for a person to be saved, Jesus would have asked for a bowl of water to immerse the thief after this conversation. However, the only thing that happened was: The robber repented and had faith in Jesus. That was enough for the robber to have a place in paradise. In addition, see what the apostle Paul said when he told how he was saved:

“~’Now, what have you forgotten? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins by calling on his name [salvation].'” (ACTS 22:16 AMP).

Did you notice that he said “be baptized” but it is “calling on his name [salvation]” that leads to the washing away of your sins? So why are we still baptized with water today even though it is not necessary to be saved? The early church in Peter’s time continued to baptize new believers in water.
