Granular fertilizers can be applied by spreading directly onto the field, planting in a strip with crops, or applied next to crops as a top dressing where they are cultivated into the soil.

Liquid fertilizers have the advantage that they can be applied both to the ground and to the plants themselves, which is also called foliar fertilization. Application through the ground will cause the roots to take up the nutrients, while application into the plant allows the plant to absorb the fertilizer through the leaves and have the nutrients more readily available for immediate use. Foliar fertilization can allow a farmer to make mid-season adjustments to add vital nutrients to plants if they don’t get the right mix early in the season and need extra fertilization.

Liquid fertilizers can be applied foliarly or in the soil. For ground application, the liquid can be sprinkled and used in a band during planting and as a mid-season top dressing.

Urea is a high-nitrogen fertilizer that is replacing ammonium nitrate as a fertilizer in many fields today. It can be applied in granular or liquid form, either by spraying or by spreading with the help of pilfer towers that distribute the liquid over the fields.

CAS, or Liquid Urea, Ammonium Nitrate, provides greater flexibility in seasonal application than dry urea. KAS can be subsurface or surface applied within the row. Subsurface injection of KAS significantly reduces the possibility of ammonia volatilization, since urea hydrolysis occurs below the soil surface. Applying CAS to the soil surface does not eliminate ammonia volatilization, but significantly reduces the risk of ammonia volatilization (Figure 2, Jones et al., 2013). The reduced risk of ammonia volatilization with KAS banding occurs because banding physically reduces the amount of nitrogen fertilizer that is exposed to the urease enzyme.

High phosphorus fertilizers are often referred to as bud and bloom fertilizers. These fertilizers promote strong bud development during the reproductive cycle. Along with encouraging healthy flowering, phosphorus is essential for healthy root and stem formation. While it is possible for a plant to get too much phosphorus, it is very rare. Plants often thrive with access to large amounts of phosphorus.

Potassium is a common element that occurs naturally in our soil and is widely available. Potash is named after the process of collecting potassium from wood ash soaked in old pots. The modern process is slightly different, but the name remains. Potassium provides plants with the potassium they need, allowing plants to better absorb water from the soil and better synthesize nutrients into basic sugars. Among the environmental factors, soil salinization is one of the most harmful factors affecting plant growth and productivity. Nutritional imbalance is also known as one of the negative effects of salinity on plant growth and productivity. Among the major plant nutrients, phosphorus (P) is a nutrient whose uptake, transport, and distribution in plants is adversely affected by salinity stress. Low P availability due to salinity stress limits crop production. The addition of supplemental phosphorus fertilizer is usually recommended to combat phosphorus deficiency in saline soils; however, poor use efficiency of available P fertilizers in saline soils limits P availability, and P fertilizers also cause significant environmental problems. The application of salinity-tolerant phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (ST-PSB) can be a very effective and economical way to increase phosphorus availability and restore phosphorus deficiency in saline soils. This review focuses on soil salinity and its effect on P availability, the mechanisms of P solubilization by ST-PSB, the diversity of ST-PSB, their role in alleviating salinity stress in plants, current and future scenarios of their use, and the potential application of this knowledge to the management of sustainable ecological system. According to this review, the addition of ST-PSB to saline soils may be an alternative to mitigate the negative effects of salinity on plants and may improve salinity tolerance.
