From content creator to product manager, I’ve spent over 6 months as a cog in the machine that is integrated marketing communications. In the next 3 months, I will be taking on a new role as Managing Director at IMC. Being an executive director has been a position on the executive board that many students avoid. For the first 2 weeks in this role, I was very lost, not knowing which duties fell in my lap and which duties belonged to my colleagues. However, I began to define my responsibilities as executive director after listening to my past colleagues, current colleagues, and professor.

The only thing I was clear about stepping into this role was that my job was to ensure that the marketing objectives of our internal and external customers were met. That means meeting with clients and making sure their objectives are concise and clear in their creative strategies. This translates to being an intermediary between your content creators/product managers and your customers. It’s learning how to give your creatives enough space to create, while making sure to meet the client’s needs. While I haven’t had a chance to accomplish this task yet, I’ve taken some notes on the way I plan to implement it. Including not waiting for the perfect product. This is something I learned from Agile. It’s better to have small steps of continuous improvement than to wait for the perfect product idea that never comes. I also learned not to micromanage my creations. I felt strongly that this meant becoming a product manager. After working as a content creator, I learned how exciting IMC can be, which sometimes resulted in a tighter grip on my content creators than I should have. Once I got out of that grip, they felt comfortable taking our product in a different direction to suit their creative styling. Creating a product is undoubtedly better. Along with that, as a managing director you oversee the big picture, so it’s your job to accommodate new and innovative ideas.

As the first Agile Sprint was underway, I quickly realized that my other duty as Managing Director was to guide the teams to stay as close as possible to our Scrum Sprint dates. In IMC, teams learn that a day’s worth of work can quickly lead to a two-week sprint to make up for it. To help teams stay on Scrum Sprint deadlines, our Operations Director created this handy calendar that was shared with our teams. However, if you’re a content creator, you know how big it can be. That’s why I’m going to implement weekly reminders on the public IMC Groups channel to create motivation for content creators. I did it at the end of an R&D sprint and got feedback from content creators that seeing that announcement gave them the push they needed to take action!

As you can imagine in a class called Integrated Marketing Communications, one of our areas of focus is creating integration. As Managing Director, I focus on breaking down the silos that naturally form when teams work individually on their products. To do this, I create transparency among teams. Allowing them to see what other teams are working on allows them to integrate that team’s media into themselves as they create. I use the IMC Product Ideas Workbook developed by the Winter 2023 management team as a way for teams to share what they are developing.

When it comes to integration, it’s also critical that teams serve all of the client’s target audience and social media channels. Using the IMC Product Ideas workbook, I created a chart to help us map out the teams’ audiences and distribution channels. As you can see most of our target audience is targeted this quarter, however with many alumni events coming up in the spring it is important to our client to serve this audience. This is where learning how to balance your client’s needs while allowing your team creative freedom is key.

The last job I continue to do as an executive director is to solve blockers. Focusing primarily on the product manager’s blockers will also mean solving the content developer’s blockers. As we stand in class, I start taking notes on the product manager’s blockers so I can help them solve those blockers outside of class. I also note their blockers during our weekly meeting times. I’ve also realized that I need to approach product managers individually and ask them what their blockers are. Last quarter, from running a team, I noticed that it was easier for my teammates to share their blockers in a one-on-one environment. When listening to others who are not bloggers, sharing that they are their true blockers can be intimidating for them and product managers. So far this quarter, not a single product manager has shared the full extent of their team’s lack of motivation to launch because they heard another product manager talking about how well their team is doing.

In the end, taking over as managing director came with some hurdles. But with the guidance of my forefathers and team members, I learned my responsibilities and executed them.
