The kidneys play an important role in detoxifying many of the end products of metabolism. By liver detoxification, or direct excretion, water-soluble nutrients such as B vitamins and vitamin C are filtered by the kidneys (1). The kidneys allow these compounds to be removed from the body through the urine, which is the main route of infection. Sweat, tears, saliva, hair, nails, and milk are all part of elimination, but to a lesser extent (2). In this blog we will explore the kidneys and their role in detoxification, specifically the MycoTOX profile and the GPL-TOX profile.

First, let’s look at the kidney and its function. A very important and complex organ, nature felt the need for both. These bean-shaped organs have many functions, but one of the main roles is to filter excess water and cleanse the blood of toxins. Very effective, they can clean all the blood in the body in an average hour (3).

The three layers of the kidney are the cortex (the outer layer), the medulla (the inner layer), and the central pelvis. Unfiltered blood passes from the cortex to the nephron via the renal artery. As the blood passes through the glomerulus, debris and excess water in the medulla diffuse into the capsule. The excess forms urine by the tubes, and useful substances that can be reused are absorbed by the capillaries. Filtered blood is sent to the heart through the renal vein. Urine is then passed through the tubes into the central pelvis, where the two ureters are released and eventually into the gallbladder (2).

Admittedly, the kidneys have other important functions, such as secreting certain hormones, stimulating red blood cell production, and maintaining fluid homeostasis within the body, but these details are beyond the scope of this blog.

How do toxins get into our systems? Toxins can be absorbed by three main routes: the respiratory tract through inhalation, the systemic through direct skin contact, or the gastrointestinal (GI) tract through ingestion.

Because lung tissue is highly vascularized and has a larger surface area, the pulmonary absorption pathway can be significant. The GI tract has a larger surface area, but pH has a greater effect on the absorption capacity of these systems.

Compounds that are not permeable to the skin (unless exposed) and are primarily lipid-soluble are of greatest concern because they are absorbed most efficiently by passive diffusion. Very simply, after a toxin is absorbed through the skin or respiratory tract, it ends up in the bloodstream where it can travel throughout the system.

GI tract absorption is different because if it passes through the membranes, it passes through the liver before entering the general circulation. Ultimately, the body’s goal is to eliminate toxins. As mentioned earlier, renal excretion is a very important mechanism for this to occur.

When toxins enter the kidney, they are largely filtered in the glomerulus with little or no plasma protein binding. Ionized toxins tend to remain in the urine, while more lipophilic toxins can reenter the renal circulation through reabsorption (2). OTA is highly nephrotoxic and this is because it is actively reabsorbed while undergoing organic anion transport in the renal tubules. It is also transported by small carrier proteins that allow the compound to cross the glomerular membrane at an increased rate (5-7). In addition to OTA, there are other mycotoxins that can pass through the kidneys.

Other ochratoxins, especially C, can cause kidney damage, but the direct mechanism of action is under investigation (8). Mycotoxins from Fusarium and Aspergillus, particularly some aflatoxins (B2, G1, M1, and M2) and T2 toxins, have been documented in the literature to affect the kidneys upon excretion (9-12).

Evidence also suggests that Gliotoxin is cytotoxic to renal epithelial cells even at lower concentrations (13). Verrucarin A and Roridin E have both been found to be absorbed in the kidneys, even more than in the liver or lungs (14, 15).

Mycophenolic acid (MPA) undergoes glucuronidation in the kidney and is eliminated primarily through the urine by active tubular secretion and glomerular filtration (16-18). All of these mycotoxins are measured in the GPL’s MycoTOX profile and can provide useful information about which kidney attacks are occurring, along with other additional benefits of running a MycoTOX profile.

Chemical toxins that pass through the kidneys can be measured in the urine. The structure of the chemical compound greatly affects its excretion through the kidneys. The more lipophilic a compound is, the more difficult it is to reabsorb, or in other words, eliminate. The more hydrophilic compounds are, the easier they are to eliminate (1, 2).

Don’t think of chemicals that are easy to eliminate as non-toxic as others. Also, although they do not bioaccumulate, they are concerned about possible adverse effects in the system before elimination, especially chronic exposure.

Tissue plays an important role in the kidney’s ability to eliminate, which means it only has a certain capacity to filter. Mitochondrial function may also be a factor, as ATP generated from the citric acid cycle can help to actively remove toxins (1).
