Vacuole, in biology, refers to a space in a cell that has no cytoplasm, is lined with membrane, and is filled with fluid. Especially in protozoa (single-celled eukaryotes), the vacuole is an important cytoplasmic organ (organelle) that performs functions such as storage, uptake, digestion, excretion, and removal of excess water. The large central vacuole common in plant cells allows them to acquire large sizes without accumulating bulk that causes metabolic difficulties. Potent secondary metabolites, such as tannins or various biochromes, are also sequestered in the vacuoles of plants, fungi, algae and certain other organisms to protect cells from autotoxicity. Vacuoles are an important component of plant, fungal and animal cells. The main responsibility of the vacuole is to maintain the turgor pressure within the cell. In animal cells, vacuoles play an auxiliary role during endocytosis and exocytosis. During exocytosis, proteins and lipids are expelled from cells.
