Because the tonoplast is selectively permeable, it also tends to maintain the cell’s pH and ionic concentration, by regulating what enters and leaves the vacuole. In addition, because its structure is so large, it pushes the contents of the cell to the edges, near the cell wall and cell membrane, thereby helping to maintain cell turgor pressure. Additionally, vacuole sap contains many different digestive enzymes capable of destroying cells (which is useful when apoptosis is required). Tonoplast also helps maintain turgor pressure, supporting the structure of plant leaves and flowers.

This structure has been designed to assist vacuole function. There is usually a slightly acidic, i.e. low pH maintained within these structures, as this helps the function of the degradative enzymes present within them. In some cases, the structure may differ slightly depending on the cell type and function, for example in yeast cells, the vacuole is a very dynamic structure that can change its morphology. However, in general it usually contains tonoplasts and cell sap in it.
