Structure Of Typical Plant Cell

A vacuole is defined as a membrane-bound, enclosed cavity or compartment present in the cytoplasm of cells (plant cells and animal cells), in which water, nutrients, and waste materials are stored. It is found in fungal cells, all plant cells, and some types of bacteria, protists, and animals. Considering the contents of vacuoles, they are often called fluid-filled compartments, but solid particles are also isolated. The liquid substance that fills the vacuole in plant cells is called cell sap.

There is no specific shape or size of vacuole. It occupies a large volume of a plant cell, as much as 80% (or at least 30% volume). If you look at a model plant cell, you will notice a large gap in the center, known as the central vacuole. As a consequence of its position, other cell organelles are pushed to the side. On the other hand, two or more small vacuoles (called vesicles) are distributed along the periphery of the animal cell.

According to studies, the fusion of small-sized membrane vesicles results in the production of vacuoles. This is true of the single, large central vacuole found in a mature plant cell. When such a cell is viewed under a sophisticated microscope, cytoplasmic strands are visible along the vacuolar compartment. The membrane that separates the vacuole from the rest of the cell is scientifically known as the tonoplast or vacuolar membrane. It is extensible and the structure changes according to the demands of the cell.

So what does a vacuole do in a cell? The functions of this enclosed cavity vary depending on the type of cell. However, its role is more pronounced in a plant cell, compared to that of an animal cell. In plants, vacuoles play a direct role in seed germination, water storage, and give specific structure to foliage and flowers. Some of the general functions of vacuoles include storage, maintenance of turbidity pressure, regulation of internal pH, and sequestration of metabolic wastes.

Difference Between Plant And Animal Cells

There are millions of cells in every multicellular living organism. These cells differ in their structure and function. Furthermore, the cells found in different living species also vary. There are many differences between an animal cell and a plant cell. A plant cell is photosynthetic in nature, so some of its organelles are different from those found in an animal cell. One such plant cell organelle that is unique to plants is the vacuole.

In plant cells, the vacuole occupies a large space. At times, this can be more than 90% of the plant cell space. They are said to be usually formed by the fusion of several membrane vesicles. For this reason, a vacuole does not have a specific size or shape. Its structure is such that it complements its function. Many mature and growing plant cells usually have a large vacuole, surrounded by a structure known as the tonoplast. This is said to be a very active and dynamic membrane of this very important part of the plant cell structure.

The vacuole in its central, hollow region contains a fluid known as cell sap. This fluid contains different compounds, some of which are excretory and some are excretory. Also, what is in the middle, depending on the type and requirements of the cell, contains various concentrations of salts, sugars and various kinds of soluble pigments. The cell sap, which is part of the structure of the central vacuole, also contains various enzymes that are even capable of digesting the cell itself. Although most mature plant cells contain one large vacuole, when studying cell biology in young plant cells, there are many vacuoles that slowly enlarge and eventually coalesce. This ultimately pushes the cytoplasm, nucleus and other such structures against the plasma membrane and cell wall.

The vacuole structure is designed to assist this important cell organelle, which is one of the key differences between plant and animal cells. Its membrane, the tonoplast, helps separate its contents from those floating in the cytoplasm. Thus, this membrane does not allow harmful substances present here to enter and damage the rest of the cell. As the tonoplast is selectively permeable in nature, it also tends to maintain the pH and ionic concentration of the cell, regulating what travels in and out of the vacuole. Also, due to such a large structure, it pushes the contents of the cell to the boundaries, close to the cell wall and cell membrane and thus, helps to maintain the vorticity pressure of the cell. In addition, vacuolar juice contains many different digestive enzymes that are capable of destroying the cell (which are useful when there is a need for apoptosis). The tonoplast also helps, along with maintaining leaching pressure, to support the plant’s leaf and flower structures.

There is usually a slightly acidic, i.e. a low pH maintained within this structure because this aids the functioning of the degradative enzymes present within it. However, in general, it usually contains a tonoplast and the cell sap within it.
