What Is The Cause Of Red Itchy Eyes – Eye allergies, also called “allergic conjunctivitis”, are a common eye disease. The tissue that covers the inside of the eyelid and the outside of the eyeball is called the conjunctiva. This tissue keeps your eyelid and eyeball moist.

Allergic conjunctivitis occurs when this tissue becomes inflamed. With eye allergies, you usually see redness and itching in both eyes instead of just one eye.

Eye allergies are a reaction to internal and external allergens that get into your eyes. Examples of these are pollen, mold spores, mites and pet dander. Eye allergies are not contagious. They cannot be transferred to another person.

Eye allergies affect about 20% to 40% of Americans each year and are increasing. Pollen, animal dander, mite droppings and mold are all triggers for allergic conjunctivitis, also called eye allergy. It is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the lining of the eye. Symptoms include itching and redness of the eyes, tearing, edema (swelling) of the conjunctiva or eyelids, and mucous discharge.

Although allergic conjunctivitis more often affects teenagers and young adults, it can strike at any age. Although it can be uncomfortable, uncomplicated allergic conjunctivitis is not vision-threatening.

Allergic conjunctivitis can usually be confirmed by your doctor based on your symptoms. Tests are not usually needed to diagnose the condition, but skin tests can help identify allergens. If your symptoms do not respond quickly to treatment, see your doctor in case you have a more serious eye condition.

Avoidance is your first line of defense. If you are allergic to cats, stay away from them or at least do not touch your eyes when you are near a cat and wash your hands immediately after touching it. If pollen is your allergy culprit, keep your windows closed and use an air purifier or air conditioner during pollen season.

Use artificial tears (available over the counter) often for relief and to dilute the allergens in the eye. You can also try an over-the-counter product.

Allergic Eye Disease

Combined antihistamine/vasoconstrictor eye drops. They contain both an antihistamine and a vasoconstrictor, such as naphazoline/pheniramine (Naphcon-A, Opcon-A, Visine Allergy Eye Relief). These can be used for a few days for quick relief. However, you should avoid regular long-term use of these medications, which can cause the blood vessels in the eye to narrow and re-reddening, where the redness returns and may even be worse than before.

Oral antihistamines. For occasional symptoms, allergic conjunctivitis can be treated with a newer generation of oral antihistamines, including the over-the-counter medications cetirizine (Zyrtec), fexofenadine (Allegra), levocetirizine (Xyzal), and loratadine (Claritin). However, keep in mind during an attack that eye drops work faster than oral medications.

For persistent symptoms, your doctor may prescribe stronger therapies. And remember to avoid rubbing your eyes. Rubbing causes the fat cells in the conjunctiva to release their histamine and other inflammatory chemicals, making symptoms worse.

One key difference between the coronavirus and seasonal allergies is fever. Seasonal allergies are not associated with fever. However, fever is a common symptom of coronavirus. If you are concerned about your symptoms, be sure to check your temperature. Other possible symptoms of coronavirus that are not related to allergies include diarrhea and nausea.

Recent studies have shown that some patients with the coronavirus may develop conjunctivitis, or viral pink eye. However, seasonal allergies can cause the same symptoms. So how can you tell the difference?

Allergic conjunctivitis usually affects both eyes with itching, burning and redness. You may also experience itching and puffiness around the eyes, and you will likely experience other allergy symptoms such as runny nose and sneezing.

Viral conjunctivitis, on the other hand, often affects only one eye. It is usually associated with burning, redness and a watery discharge. Viral conjunctivitis would be of concern to your doctor if it is accompanied by other symptoms of the coronavirus, such as fever, cough, extreme fatigue, difficulty breathing or chest pain.

If your eye irritation is accompanied by symptoms of the coronavirus, call your healthcare provider immediately, especially if you experience shortness of breath or chest pain.

Keep in mind that while the coronavirus is not always accompanied by eye irritation, it can be transmitted through your eyes. Your eyes can be exposed to viral particles that are sprayed when someone coughs, or by touching an infected surface and then rubbing the eye.

This is why social distancing is so important. If you must go out, wearing glasses can help reduce exposure. You should also avoid touching your eyes.

If your eye irritation isn’t accompanied by the main coronavirus symptoms listed above, try treating your allergy symptoms as usual. Consult your doctor if symptoms do not improve.
