However, God’s grace awaits any willing person, no matter the weight of their sins. With Misfit, a male character in the play, O’Connor’s view of life and salvation matches his own as the story unfolds. A subtle meaning of ‘good man’ stands out as part of O’Connor’s message as presented in this work.

The phrase ‘a good person’ and the theme of who a good person is, according to the judgment of people in the play, face abuse. O’Connor deliberately brings this matter up to confirm that ‘good’ is in fact relative, changing with people and hence meaningless. Grandma randomly uses the term ‘good man’ when referring to men.

According to her, a man is good if what he does or what he can do aligns with her same considerations, given the opportunity, regardless of prevailing moral teachings. For example, when the family stops at a bistro, they run into a man, Red Sammy, the owner of the restaurant.

His complaints are evident regarding the case in which he allowed two men to purchase gasoline on credit. According to him, they looked ‘good’ and creditworthy. However, the two men do not pay, causing Red Sammy to declare them untrustworthy. When he demands to know why he is doing this to Grandma, she says, “Because you are a good man!” (O’Connor 580). Red Sammy is easily deceived, has poor judgment skills and has blind faith. he is good?

None of these are good, yet Grandma calls him good because she can relate to what the man is doing. Moreover, the grandmother desperately calls Misfit a good man. This follows from the claim that the misfit cannot shoot the woman, although this is not the case, as the man does not make this clear.

Therefore, out of blindness, Grandma goes on to say, “I know you’re a good man at heart. I can just look at you and tell” (O’Connor 582). Based on said descriptions, both men are “good” according to the grandmother, not because they are morally upright, but because they match her values. These people are not ‘good’ per se, but grace abounds in them as will be explained later.

The theme of ‘kindness’ is prominent in O’Connor’s play. She brings out the fact that grace is for everyone, but not only for the righteous. God bestows this favor upon all His people, regardless of their present sins, and it is worth noting that the most unlikely candidates will receive it. Neither grandmother nor misfit spiritual integrity.

They seem unfit for God’s grace. They carry obvious flaws and weaknesses. For example, Grandma is a liar. She lies to her grandchildren that a certain house she once saw has a secret board. This is nothing more than an exaggeration, the purpose of which is to make it seem more interesting to them than it really is.

She also controls her son and believes that she is the right person to pass judgments on people, call them good and tell them what to do. For example, she tells Misfit, “If you would pray…Jesus would help you” (O’Connor 584). The reason behind the prayer is that Maspit is a murderer, who needs to repent for forgiveness. Ironically, Grandma can’t even form a prayer sentence. Both are not as likely candidates for grace as people might argue, but that is far from the case. Grace is waiting for them.

As they solve the mystery behind Jesus’ work to raise the dead, Grandma cries and calls out the name of Jesus. She even reveals, “Why you’re one of my babies. You’re one of my children!” (O’Connor 585). Now she understands that everyone is human and equal. To understand this, due to the obvious prevailing differences in people, calls for the grace of God.

Grandma has it, despite her flaws. In addition, Misfit initially delights in killing people, but as the play progresses, he states that, “It is no real pleasure in life” (O’Connor 585). He understands that happiness comes only by knowing Jesus. It does not come from killing but from saving people’s lives, just as Jesus did. This is kindness and kindness in action!

Misfit’s view of life and salvation is consistent with O’Connor’s observations. According to the two, challenges should precede salvation. Both have experienced enough of them and can testify that joy is found only in Jesus. To confirm this, O’Connor states that she would have had no reason to write, see or enjoy anything if she were not Catholic.

It is no different from the Misfit’s words that “there is no pleasure in life” (O’Connor 585). There is no joy outside of Christianity and regardless of their past, whether a sinner like Grandma and Misfit, grace abounds for all. It is there for murderers, liars, as well as for you.
