Iron deficiency anemia is caused by a lack of iron. You need iron to make hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body. Typical symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, palpitations and pale skin.
Less common symptoms include headache, dizziness, tinnitus, hair loss, painful sores at the corners of the mouth, spoon-shaped nails and restless legs.
Anemia can be caused by a low-iron diet, diseases such as peptic ulcers or Crohn’s disease, surgery, or in women it can be caused by heavy menstrual bleeding, pregnancy or childbirth.
For vegetarians who cut out meat, anemia can be caused by iron deficiency. For vegans who give up all animal products, including dairy, eggs and even honey, anemia can also be caused by a lack of vitamin B12.

Talk to your GP. A blood test will confirm if you are anemic. If your red blood cells are low, you will either be told to change your diet, take over-the-counter supplements, or be prescribed iron tablets.
Eat more iron-rich foods such as dark green leafy vegetables, legumes such as beans and lentils, pumpkin seeds, whole grains, fish and lean red meat. If you are vegan or vegetarian, you may need iron supplements.
Constant fatigue can be a sign of nutrient deficiency. Here are some of the most common causes of fatigue.
Symptoms include extreme fatigue, visual disturbances, tingling, muscle weakness, irritability, depression, poor memory and concentration. A blood test will confirm if you are low in vitamin B12. Does taking vitamin B12 prevent fatigue? There is evidence that it helps. Vitamin B12 injections or tablets are usually used as treatment.

Tell your GP about your symptoms. They may need to run blood tests to identify vitamins and minerals you may be deficient in.

Other symptoms may include slower movement and speech, changes in appetite, unexplained aches and pains, and lack of energy.
If you have symptoms of depression most of the day, every day for more than 2 weeks, you should talk to your doctor. When you’re depressed, it can feel like nothing matters, but it’s important that you seek help.

Treatment may include lifestyle changes, such as healthy eating, exercise, and stopping smoking or drinking (nicotine and alcohol can make depression worse).
Your GP can refer you to talking therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or prescribe medication to help you recover. It is important that you get help. Left untreated, depression can disrupt everything in your life.
These include inflammatory conditions such as celiac disease, where your immune system reacts to the protein in gluten.
Other considerations include sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, where you wake up several times during the night because your breathing stops and starts. This symptom is often associated with obesity, so if you suffer from it and/or experience a lot of daytime sleepiness, ask your doctor about sleep apnea.

Your tiredness can also be caused by mental fatigue. You should discuss this with your doctor, as a psychological option such as talk therapy may help you recover.
