As white blood cells accumulate at the site, the area becomes red and swollen, which can be painful as the body fights the infection or fixes the injury.

Acute inflammation allows the body to heal and strengthen itself. It is associated with inflammation, injury, and viral or bacterial infection and is short-term, usually lasting two weeks or less.

Bad inflammation happens when the immune system is stimulated, but it shouldn’t be. The root causes of poor inflammation include exposure to toxic chemicals and heavy metals, or causes such as chronic stress, autoimmune diseases, and obesity. These conditions continue to overstimulate the immune response, resulting in long-term inflammation. They can lead to health problems such as arthritis, dementia, allergies, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and depression.

Chronic inflammation is slow, long-term inflammation that persists in the body for months or years. Chronic inflammation involves bad inflammation and is linked to more than 90% of all diseases.

What Is Chronic Inflammation?

In our clinic, we see many patients with various degrees of inflammation. The infographic below shows the most common reasons. If you peruse the list, you’ll see that there’s a lot you can do on your own to reduce inflammation.

Standard Western Diet – Unfortunately, the Western diet is high in refined carbohydrates, sugars, alcohol, artificial preservatives, flavors and colors, with minimal fruits and vegetables, starving the body of essential anti-inflammatory nutrients. This type of diet over time will tip the immune system to become anti-inflammatory, bypassing the body’s anti-inflammatory safeguards. When inflammation is left unchecked in the body, it destroys tissue, further suppresses the immune system, and allows disease to take hold, especially where our bodies are weak.

Chronic stress – Our bodies are not designed to live in a constant state of stress. When we are under stress, our body goes into a flight or fight response, which causes adrenaline and cortisol levels to rise. Both are important in the short term because they keep us out of trouble. Prolonged activation of adrenaline and cortisol lets the body know that the emergency is still present; in turn, the body suppresses all non-essential (emergency) functions, including immune and digestive functions. A suppressed immune system is unable to fight inflammatory mediators, and the digestive system is unable to properly absorb nutrients from the food we eat. In addition, cortisol increases the release of glucose, suppresses insulin, and narrows the arteries, making it harder for the heart to work.
