Prayer Guide: How To Pray For Our Country

Theologian Andrew Murray, who has written more than anyone on the subject of prayer in the daily life of Christians, once declared, “To live fully [in Christ] means to pray a lot.”

Those of us who, by the grace of God (Ephesians 2:8-9), have come to faith in Christ, serve a God who wants us to come to him with our prayers and petitions (Philippians 4 :6.)

But, unlike Andrew Murray’s 19th-century days, not much is being said on the subject of prayer today. One of the main reasons, I think, is that Christians look.

As discussed within the evangelical church, it is largely limited to offering worldly, self-serving appeals that God will fulfill what we have already asked for in His will for our lives. It has been fixed. That is, the fulfillment of our preconceived notions of our “destiny” and “purpose.”

What Is The Role Of Prayer?

Requests for God’s divine blessing, favor and consent to our desires and plans flow easily from our lips. We confidently offer such earthly prayers because these kinds of prayers are “safe,” and do not require much of us spiritually in return.

This is the prayer of Psalm 26:2, “Test me, O Lord, and test me. Examine my mind and heart.”

The reason this prayer is so dangerous is because it’s a prayer that many of us don’t really want to answer.

For we know how holy and righteous God will find us, before a word comes out of our mouth, when He searches the depths of our inward parts (Psalm 139:23-24). Psalm 26 Words to God in Prayer Presenting: 2 is like taking an exam that we know ahead of time that we’re going to fail, no matter how diligently we prepare. This fact is presented rather graphically in the life of Simon Peter in Luke chapter 5:

Praying In The Spirit

But when Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ feet and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” – Luke 5:8 (NASB)

As a fisherman, Peter benefited directly from the fish miracle that Jesus performed (Luke 5:1-7.) But instead of celebrating the abundance of his newfound prosperity, he had his own in his presence. A heart-wrenching sense of inadequacy. Christ’s holiness (1 John 1:5) immediately brought Peter to his knees in shame and humiliation.

“A God whose presence and scrutiny I could escape would be a small and insignificant deity. But the true God is great and terrible, only because He is always with me and His eyes are always upon me. Living A great business becomes when you realize that you spend every moment of your life in the sight and company of an omniscient, omnipresent Creator.- JI Packer, God-Knower

Contrasted with God’s natural holiness is our natural sinfulness, which makes it a dangerous thing to ask God to examine our minds and hearts.

Why Is Prayer So Vitally Important For Christians? — Beautiful Christian Life

In doing so, we invite God to hold up the image of His perfection against our imperfection, His righteousness against our unrighteousness, and show us who we really are – who we are on the inside – the person we think someone else is. Do not know, leave God (Mark 7:17-23; Luke 6:43-45; Romans 3:23.)

In Psalm 26:2, the Hebrew verb test is a legal term meaning to examine, test, try, prove.

The context is that of an attorney presenting evidence in a court of law for consideration by a judge and jury.

Scriptures On Repentance (true Meaning Of Forgiving Your Sins Here)

“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our sins, according to the riches of his grace.” – Ephesians 1:7 (NASB)

In a world where the gospel is becoming less about Jesus and more about ourselves, we need to be reminded that perfect people don’t need God’s grace – and there are no perfect people.

What separates us from Him is to adopt the sanctification He desires for each of His children (Romans 8:29-30; 2 Corinthians 1:21-22.) As the French theologian John Calvin wrote, ‘ ‘Everybody’s life. Christians should meditate and practice godliness, because they are called to sanctification.

It is with this goal and desire in mind that believers in Christ should invite Him to do whatever He does to bring this sanctification into our lives.
