It is better to consider the structure of the body in terms of the basic levels of the structure that are increasing in complexity: subatomic particles, atoms, molecules, organisms, cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and organisms.

To study the chemical level of structure, scientists consider the simplest building blocks of matter: subatomic particles, atoms and molecules. Everything in the universe is made up of one or more special elements called elements, well-known examples are hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, calcium, and iron. The smallest of any of these pure substances (matter) is an atom. Atoms consist of subatomic particles such as protons, electrons and neutrons. Two or more atoms combine to form molecules, such as water molecules, proteins, and sugars found in living organisms. Molecules are the chemical building blocks of every body system.

A cell is the smallest autonomous functional unit. Even bacteria, which are very small, independent organisms, have cellular structures. Each virus is a single cell. All living systems of the human body contain cells, and almost all human biological functions are carried out in cells or are initiated by cells.

A human cell usually consists of simple membranes that surround the cytoplasm, a water-based fluid with numerous small functional parts called organelles. Another example is the pancreas, which has an endocrine function (produces hormones) and a digestive function (produces digestive juices).

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) classifies veterans’ disabilities by organ system. Essentially, service-related injuries and illnesses are classified by each organ system most affected or damaged by the condition.
