What Happens If My Progesterone Levels Are Too Low?

If progesterone levels do not peak during the luteal phase of the cycle, this indicates an anovulatory cycle – meaning ovulation has not occurred. Classically, a progesterone test is recommended on day 21 of your cycle, but this is only relevant if you ovulate on day 14, and have a 28 day cycle. If you know when you ovulate, count 7 days after ovulation and test on this day. If you are unsure or have different cycle lengths, subtract 7 days from the length of your last few cycles and test on this day.

You aim for at least 35nmol/L of progesterone during your luteal phase for optimal health. Generally higher is better, and while too much of any hormone is never a good thing, I have never personally seen a woman with progesterone levels that are ‘too high’!
