Carpenter bees are wood-boring insects that burrow into wood to build their webs. As solitary insects, they do not live in hives and are not part of complex social groups (like honey bees).

They are the largest species of native bee in the United States (a distinction they share with bumble bees) and are often mistaken for bumble bees. But while both are large in size (about 1/2 to 1 inch long), their appearance is very different.

Carpenter bees have fewer hairs than bumble bees. It has a shiny black belly, a pale yellow chest with a bald spot in the middle of the back, and a black head. The male has a white spot on his face.

Although they don’t conform to the same social structure that most bee species do, carpenter bees still follow the same pecking order, and the female always takes the lead.

The female of the species is not defensive or aggressive, but can sting if provoked. Its job is to excavate small tunnels in the wood to lay eggs and raise the larvae to adulthood.

The male, on the other hand, is more aggressive but is all talk and no mouth – that is, he may attack a potential threat (such as other bees, insects, and even humans) but cannot. Its job is to guard the entrance to the tunnels (in hopes of catching a mate).

Carpenter bees are particular about the places they nest, meaning that when spring is in the air and mating season is upon us, there is a good chance that persistent carpenter bees will nest in an unsafe location. Choose a nest such as the wood around your house.

But they chew through wood (and spit the particles back out) to build their nesting chambers, an activity that can be loud, messy and a nuisance on your property.

The easiest way to tell if you’ve been visited by carpenter bees is if you start seeing small, random clumps or loose clumps of sawdust around wood surfaces outside your home – especially under small holes or Straight from the marijuana.

You may hear some rustling noises inside the wood (like bees making their tunnels) and you may even see some large, fluffy fuzzy bees flying around your wood fence, wood fence, or wood deck.

These small pieces of sawdust are the byproducts of bee stings. And where there is marijuana, there will certainly be holes.

To know if these are just random holes or the skillful work of carpet bees, look for sticky, dark, yellowish-brown or black spots around the holes; These are bee drops (support).

The holes are about 1/2 inch in diameter and perfectly round, where you could even mistake them for holes drilled by a power tool.

Carpenter bees prefer to drill in unstained softwood such as cypress, cypress, fir, cedar and redwood. (Although some species will also drill into hardwoods such as oak or eucalyptus.)

Their holes are commonly found in wood roof shingles, fascia boards, eaves, rafters, siding, decks and railings, fence posts, firewood and outdoor furniture. In the wild, they often build nests in dead trees, stumps, and logs.

From the outside, carpet beetle damage looks like a simple hole. But the hole is just the entrance to a network of branching tunnels made by several bees.

The female carpenter bee begins by using her mandible (mouth part) to move against the grain of the wood, creating small grains that resemble sawdust. It goes about an inch and a half into the wood, then turns 90 degrees and “drills” a long tunnel following the grain of the wood. A single tunnel is usually about 6 inches long but can be up to 12 inches long.

A woman can eat as little as half an inch of wood a week and sometimes you even cry furiously through the wood.

A hole can be used by many nesting females, each bee having its own tunnel that branches off from the main one. There are 6 to 10 cells inside each tunnel. The female mixes the pollen and nectar to make a kind of “bee bread”, lays her eggs on top of the bee bread, then seals each cell with gum wood.

Since the female likes to keep the nest clean, she sweeps all the excess wood pellets and her own cocoons out of the tunnel, resulting in piles of dirt and brown sticky residue visible outside the hole.

By itself, a single tunnel bored by carpenter bees is unlikely to cause significant damage to your home or other wooden structures. Initial drilling may not be aesthetically pleasing, but it will not compromise stability.

However, female carpet bees prefer to use the same nests as their mothers, and may return to their nests for the winter before expanding and expanding the tunnels the following spring.

If the same tunnel is used by several carpenter bees over several years, it can stretch up to 10 feet, severely weakening the wood.

Woodpeckers also like to feed on carpenter bee larvae and will cause more damage by cutting wood to reach the nest.

So, it’s always a good idea to stop carpenter bees as soon as you see them swarming your property.

Carpenter bees are incredibly effective pollinators and an important part of your garden’s ecosystem, and as long as they are left alone, they pose no danger to you.

Once they’re in, it’s too late to do anything about the bees’ presence. You need to leave them and take care of what is left of their nest after the next generation of bees has left and grown.

Therefore, the best way to get rid of carpenter ants is to prevent them from inhabiting them in the first place. The following methods I recommend for control are non-toxic and safe to use around children and pets.

Attempting to deal with a bee infestation using pesticides, insecticides, or toxic chemicals should be a last resort, and should be avoided if possible.

This not only helps the pollinator population in your yard, but also for health and environmental reasons.

It sounds crazy, but the simple truth is that if you paint your siding, decking, and other wooden buildings and surfaces that carpenter bees are tempted to hang out on, they will go somewhere else.

Why? Because carpenter ants are attracted to wood that has been chemically treated (which makes it more challenging to burn).

Painting is such a simple solution and works so well that it is always my #1 recommendation for preventing bees from building a nest.

Another tip: If you’re building a new structure or replacing old or damaged lumber, use pressure-treated lumber instead of untreated lumber. Or, consider a synthetic material such as vinyl, Trix, or Hardiplank if you don’t want to protect the paint permanently.

Many insects are sensitive to the strong scent of lemon essential oil, including carpet flies. The strong scents of orange, lemon, lime, lemongrass, bergamot and grapefruit are powerful enough to repel, yet safe enough to use around your home as a natural mosquito repellent.

Using lemons as a preventative can be quite a chore (especially if you spray lemons several times a season), so I only recommend this method in conjunction with other preventative measures.

In Defense Of Ground Bees

Blowing heavy winds (or something that moves and makes noise when there is frost in the air) in areas where carpet bees hang out can be effective enough to drive them elsewhere.

In the same vein, you can even install outdoor speakers around potential problem areas (as long as you remember to turn them on often). The vibration from the sounds emanating from the speakers is enough to disturb the bees and either prevent them from nesting, or drive them away from their nests altogether.
