When possible, we try to keep their nests intact. After all, bees and wasps help pollinate gardens and we need them to some extent. We love bees! To encourage them to build nests above ground rather than underfoot, some experts will advise you to be preventative by thoroughly soaking your lawn – throughout the season – as it is more difficult for ground bees to dig in dense, saturated soil. Why Do I See Bees On The Ground? Do They Have Nests?

A few years ago, there was a large yellow wasp nest underground on the property line between our house and my neighbor.

There was a great risk of someone inadvertently disturbing the nest and being stung while mowing or doing yard work.

My neighbor, who is an experienced and accredited biologist, thought it would be more effective to use chemicals.

He donned a bee suit for protection and applied the mixture to the hole at night, when the yellow jackets were least active.

Simple Ways To Get Rid Of Ground Bees

Needless to say, none of us were happy using chemicals. We simply didn’t know of any other method at the time.

I recently discovered how to eliminate ground hornets and yellow jackets without chemicals. This tip comes from Rachel, a reader friend who commented on the article on the wasp nest.

A neighbor presented me with a wonderful solution to get rid of ground bees (yellow vests, etc.) that build their nests underground. He simply puts a marshmallow or something sweet (granola bar, etc.) in the hole in the evening, and it attracts the skunks, who then happily eradicate the nest, because they consider the bees a delicacy! I tried this when yellow jackets were nesting in a raised bed; within a few nights, they were gone!

What a fantastic idea! The only problem is that you must have skunks or related species of stink badgers in your community.

Since we don’t have many skunks in my community anymore due to rapid development over the last decade, I didn’t initially think this method would work well for me.

However, after doing more research, I discovered that raccoons and armadillos will also happily eat a ground nest filled with hornets or yellow jackets! (1)

So, if you don’t have skunks around to use the granola bar approach, try a can of pet food to bring back the raccoons!

In my experience, wet pet food will really attract raccoons. I have used this approach to humanely trap them if they threatened my laying hens in the past.

How To Prevent And Get Rid Of Wasps Near Your Home And Garden

If you prefer to avoid attracting raccoons because they can enter chicken coops, try using overripe fruit, mealworms or rotten meat to attract armadillos.

So measures to attract skunks, raccoons or armadillos could inadvertently invite bears to the party if you live in a rural area.

For areas of the world without raccoons, armadillos and skunks, it’s good to know that domestic ducks will also happily eat a nest of ground hornets or yellow jackets! (3)

If you decide to try this method, be sure to put the bait in the nest at night when the hornets or yellow jackets are dormant.
