You’re probably thinking, why in the world would I want these bees?! Well, I will tell you that these are my native bees to my particular area. They are stronger than any package or nuc I could order in the mail. We have been making bees for three years and have lost all of them. Keeping bees in our place is by far the most difficult effort on our homestead, EVER. Learning how to keep bees is HARD (well for us at least it has been, the learning curve is straight!)

This is not a swarm. It’s an existing honey beehive! People, please read that again. Read my typing… this is not a swarm. It is a beehive because there is a comb.

Smoke a little and then start cutting off a comb. Every move John made looked for the queen.

Zip tied the comb to our Goldstar Top Bar Honey beehive. If you have a langstroth boat you can put a rubber band from the comb. See the picture, the source is from Einstein Bee Farm.

A side note on getting the ridge on the top bars. I do not recommend a zip tie comb that is very heavy and dark. The bees will attach it to the bars, but the new wax cannot support the heavy comb. You will not be able to work your hive at all. Heavy dark comb will fall from the top bars, use Langstrough hives if you are removing a colony of bees that has been there for a long time. You’ll know they’ve been there a long time if the wax is black and very heavy. They won’t be much new wax (it’s pale yellow). Don’t ask me how I know this. It was a painful lesson.

The goal is to find the queen. Get one of these queen clips. We didn’t find her on this haul, however, the good news is that within 3 days of laying, the bees hatched and the bees made a new queen!

STATEN ISLAND, NY – It’s honeybee swarm season, according to Nick Rozak, Staten Island beekeeper and owner of Green Stinger Trading. Rozak keeps hives in Stapleton, Rosebank, New Brighton and Port Richmond.

“We had our first reported bee swarms on Staten Island (Sunday),” Rozak said. “Swarming bees are relatively harmless despite their scary appearance, but if you find one near your home, they should be removed due to the likelihood that they will move into your house or car.”

Rozak recommends not spraying the bees and calling it a bee for professional removal. “First, stay calm and leave them alone,” Rozak said. “The bees form a huge cluster to protect the queen bee and to control the temperature of the cluster. Swarms that form clusters are simply resting while scout bees go out in search of a new home.

“They don’t intend to stay in that location for more than a few days at most. Most of the bees you look at are so bloated with honey and other resources that they can’t physically use their stingers or fly properly.”

Rozak says he – or any beekeeper – will safely remove the bees from your property and relocate them to a new home. “Don’t spray them and don’t call an exterminator,” he said. “If you call a good exterminator, they’ll call a beekeeper, anyway. If they’re not as good, they might try to kill them and charge you for it.”

The recent decline in bees and other pollinators threatens US crop yields and poses a risk to global food security, according to a recent study. Most of the world’s crops rely on honey bees and wild bees for pollination, so declines in managed bee and wild bee populations raise concerns about food security.

“We all need to help restore the bee population and they need your help as much as we need it to survive,” added Rozak. “In New York City, beekeepers try to get rid of all the swarms we can because they have very little natural habitat left, the chances of them dying or moving into an attic or garage are high ok

“When a beekeeper applies for a NYC Beekeeping permit, we all agree to help remove these swarms. If you don’t call a beekeeper soon enough and bees move into your walls and start building a new hive, that will be something completely different that will cost you.”

How To Humanely Remove A Beehive From Your Yard

Honey bees are ‘super-organisms’ that can only survive in colonies, or hives. “Swarming is how honeybees create new hives,” Rozak said. “Once or twice a year a healthy beehive will split in two, create a new queen and send the old queen away with half the bees to form a new hive elsewhere.

“Seeing swarms of honeybees in your neighborhood is a great sign that your environment is improving and that the bees are healthy, that the plants are healthy.”

According to Rozak, the location of the cluster is random – usually in a tree. “But on Staten Island, it could be on the side of your house, on a car, a bike or a patio umbrella,” he said. “Once the beekeeper sees the swarm and determines that the location is safe to work (ie, not on a power line or traffic light), the beekeeper will set up a box and try to “shake off” most of the bees into the box.

Once most of the bees are in a safe box, the beekeeper waits, sometimes until after sunset for all the scout bees to come back so that the bees can also be transferred to the box. The bees will know that the queen bee has moved into the box and will naturally follow her in.

“Once the Beekeeper feels that all the bees are in the box and no longer flying, we will take them away and place them in a local apiary,” said Rozak.

If you find a honey bee swarm, call 311 or 911; the NYPD has an official beekeeper who will dispose of them safely, but if the bees are in a safe location it is best to use a local Beekeeper.
