How old is the earth? The answer may seem simple. A typical estimate is that our planet is around 4.5 billion years old. But the closer planetary scientists look, the more complex the story becomes. Nuances about how our planet came to be could shift Earth’s age by about half a billion years.

The Earth: How Old Does It Look?

“Age is easy to talk about, but it gets more complicated as you get closer,” says geology professor Thomas Lapen, who chairs the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Houston. As scientists sought to determine more accurate measurements of Earth’s age, they had to grapple with the specifics of how our planet formed.

“When you’re born, it’s a moment in time,” Lapen explains. But the formation of planets is a process that takes a long time – millions of years. To assign an age to the Earth, astrophysicists, planetary scientists, and geologists must determine which point in the process could be considered Earth’s birth.

About 4.6 billion years ago, gas and dust swirled in orbit around the newly formed sun. During the first million years of the solar system, particles collided and coalesced into asteroids and planet seeds. These space rocks kept crashing into each other, some getting bigger and bigger and forming the solar system as we see it today.

But planets aren’t just big piles of rock. As they accumulate material, these celestial bodies also differentiate into core, mantle, and crust layers (at least in the case of Earth and other terrestrial planets). Accretion and differentiation take time, probably on the order of tens of millions of years. Some might consider the point in this phase of Earth’s formation to be the birth of our planet. However, Lapen says he considers it to be the conception of the Earth and the birth came later when a cataclysmic event also created the Moon.

According to the widely accepted giant impact theory, during the chaos of the early days of our solar system, the proto-Earth collided with another small body about the size of Mars. When they collided, the debris coalesced into the moon in orbit around Earth.

The impact is thought to have essentially “reset” the materials that made up the planet, Lapen says. At that time, therefore, the Earth could have been covered by a dense magmatic ocean. After a violent collision, the material of both bodies mixed and coalesced into the planetary and lunar system we know today. Evidence for such “resetting” comes from both terrestrial and lunar rocks that contain the same forms of oxygen, Lapen explains.

“Proto-Earth was most likely destroyed or changed in composition,” says Lapen. “In my mind, the Earth was not the Earth as we know it until the event of the formation of the Moon.”

If this event marked the birth of our planet, the Earth would be somewhere between 4.4 billion and 4.52 billion years old. But determining a more specific age of our planet requires sifting through ancient evidence.

How Old Is The Earth?

Like detectives looking for clues to an ancient crime, planetary scientists must look to the evidence that remains today to piece together the early history of our planet. But with all the turmoil during this chapter—a tumultuous magma ocean and intense geological turnover—proof can be hard to find.

One way to constrain the age of the Earth is to look for the oldest rocks on the planet, Lapen explains, which formed right after the magmatic ocean hardened into a solid surface. On this date, scientists are looking for zircons discovered in the Jack Hills of Western Australia – the oldest known earth minerals.

To determine the age of these crystals, the team of scientists used a technique called radiometric dating, which measures the uranium they contain. Because this radioactive element decays into lead at a known rate, scientists can calculate a mineral’s age based on the ratio of uranium to lead in a sample. This method revealed that the zircons are approximately 4.4 billion years old.

4.4 billion years ago, because the rock record “would have been erased by the Moon-forming event,” Lapen says. So the planet is not younger than 4.4 billion years. But how much older can it be? To answer that, Lapen says, scientists are turning elsewhere — including the moon.

New Research Reveals Age Of Universe Estimated To Be 26.7 Billion Years Old

The body rocks of Earth’s satellites are better preserved than those here because the Moon does not undergo processes such as plate tectonics that would melt and mix Earth’s continents. There are two main sources for these traces: in lunar meteorites that fall to Earth, and in samples collected directly from the Moon during NASA’s Apollo program.

Like the proto-Earth, the young moon was covered by a magmatic ocean. The oldest rocks recovered from the lunar surface may indicate when the lunar crust formed. The researchers radiometrically dated zircon fragments collected during the Apollo 14 mission, corrected calculations of cosmic ray exposure, and found that the lunar crust solidified about 4.51 billion years ago.

There would have been a period of time between the bodies colliding and merging, cooling and differentiating, Lapen says, so this date also has a window of uncertainty, about 50 million years.

“Dating the exact event is very difficult,” he says. Lapen estimates that the Earth-Moon system probably formed between 4.51 billion and 4.52 billion years ago, but some scientists say the calculations could be as much as 50 million years off.

Earth’s Inner Core

Another way to narrow down this time window is to look at the rocks that existed when the proto-Earth formed. When the planets solidified from debris around the young sun, not all of the material coalesced into the worlds and their moons we see today. Some are preserved in asteroids or comets.

Sometimes these time capsules of the solar system come to us as meteorites that fall to the surface of our planet. Lapen says the oldest known space rock is the meteorite Erg Chech 002. It is believed to be a fragment of the erupted crust of a primitive protoplanet from the early solar system. As such, the dating of the Erg Chech 002 meteorite provides a snapshot of when the proto-Earth was likely at a similar stage of its conception.

“If the ‘birth of the Earth’ is defined as the time of the formation of the first proto-Earth core or protoplanet that eventually grew by accretion to form the present Earth,” says Lapen, “it may have been that long ago, the age of [Erg Chech 002].” The scientists calculated that this piece of igneous crust crystallized about 4.565 billion years ago.

To a human, the uncertainty of around 50 million years, when the Earth-Moon system was formed, sounds huge and imprecise. But on planetary scales and geologic time, “it’s a good estimate,” Lapen says, especially for something that happened billions of years ago.
