LEDs are the key tools being sought to reduce the energy consumed by buildings and the associated GHG emissions. And the addition of NLCs makes the development of ignition an even bigger game-changer. According to a 2018 DLC report, the potential additional energy savings from the addition of NLCs to commercial LED plants over five years amounts to 75 terawatt hours (tWh) of electricity – about 17 times greater than the 4.5 tWh annual Hoover Dam output. As we seek more and better data to promote wider adoption of this important energy efficiency strategy, DLC and the Northwest Energy Alliance (NEEA) have launched another study to update the 2018 findings. The purpose of this one-year project is to accelerate the adoption of NLC systems and services by providing priority savings information, encouraging growth in utility by supporting programs that are expected to reduce NLCs costs.

The project’s contractor, Energy Solutions, will collect data from NLC systems for a variety of building formats, including offices, warehouses, health facilities, educational institutions, restaurants, retail establishments and manufacturing sites. Since the types, sites, and control of the building were represented more than in the 2018 study, the new study (planned for release in 2020) will investigate the best operational practices to achieve even higher energy savings through LED with NLC projects.

The data and analysis from the “Networked Light Control Energy Characterization Study” will be used directly by NEEA, DLC member companies of utility and efficiency institutions to promote the development and expansion of the NLC program, to encourage them to ask for the quantity and validity of their energy; establish incentive levels, and determine the cost-effectiveness of the program.
