One of the best things about eSIM trials is that you can see the signal for your current carrier and the one you’re testing at the same time. And you can even decide to continue using your current carrier and number for phone calls while using the cellular data trial.

While Verizon has led the top phone carriers in terms of having the most customers (and still does) along with the widest coverage for the past decade, T-Mobile has gained a lot of ground with its Sprint’s acquisition and deployment of high-speed 5G in the last decade. a few years. That has meant that Verizon and AT&T are both playing a bit of catch-up with T-Mobile on 5G coverage as they work on rolling out more mid-band spectrum.

All the major carriers’ coverage maps will probably look great on their websites, here are some tips to find out what the coverage will actually be like:

Remember, smaller carriers (MVNOs) lease access to networks from the three major US carriers. Although you usually get the same performance, there may be data caps and throttling during times of congestion.

As a note, carrier speed will depend on a variety of factors including your location, device, signal strength, network congestion, and more.

And if you live in a big city versus a small town, speeds can be very different. Verizon usually leads with the fastest speeds of 1,000+ Mbps if you have PCB 5G coverage, but T-Mobile currently has more availability with its more moderately fast mid-band 5G. However, T-Mobile is bringing its Ultra Capacity 5G Standalone service to more cities that can offer speeds of up to 3,000 Mbps.

Here’s a look at how the three major carriers compare for average US speeds in recent studies from Ookla and Opensignal:

T-Mobile suggests that it offers about 20% lower prices for its unlimited plans compared to AT&T and Verizon. T-Mobile also includes taxes and fees in its advertised prices.

All major phone carriers are offering (at the time of writing) up to $1,000 in trade-in when purchasing a new device. But T-Mobile is the most aggressive with up to $650 for early termination fees or paying for a current device balance.

The major carriers also include free streaming video service with some unlimited plans. And Verizon offers more than just a Disney+ bundle. Depending on the unlimited plan you can get additional benefits such as Apple Music, Apple Arcade, or even an Apple One bundle.

I think it depends on where you live more than anything. Some cities are better than others on certain networks and T-Mobile is bad outside of a city.

With the iPhone 15 now available for pre-order, carriers have already started to highlight their latest offerings. All three major carriers are offering up to $1,000 off, as long as you meet certain requirements and are willing to commit to financing the new phone through the carrier.

That is not new. Carrier promotions have long focused on locking people in for periods of time, dating back to the days of two-year contracts that predate even the early years of the iPhone. Offering different discounts depending on the plan you’re on and the phone you’d be trading in isn’t new either.

What’s new about the iPhone 15, at least for T-Mobile and Verizon, is how the iPhone 15 is the first real opportunity for both carriers to try to get people to switch to their newer plans, pricier that have been introduced over the last few months.

This is what you need to know as you enter the new iPhone season about the carrier dealing with the three major US providers: AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.

The easiest carrier agreement is actually from AT&T. As it has done in the past, the carrier is requiring new or existing users to be on a wide variety of its recent and older unlimited plans (with the exception of its cheapest Value Plus option which is limited to one line) and trade in a recent phone in good condition.

Phones eligible for the $1,000 off include models from last year and older premium phones such as the iPhone 12 Pro Max as well as any iPhone from the iPhone 13 or iPhone 14 lines (except the iPhone 13 mini). The Google Pixel 7 Pro is also eligible, along with a variety of Samsung devices including the Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4, S22 Ultra 5G, X Cover6 Pro and the entire S23 line.

Cell Phone Plans Worth Switching To

As before, AT&T requires you to commit to a 36-month installment plan, where the $1,000 is discounted as monthly bill credits. If you decide to leave the carrier early you would need to pay the remaining balance on your phone.

If you want to get the full $1,000 off Verizon, you’ll need to add a new line or switch from a competing provider and then sign up for its priciest unlimited plan called Unlimited Ultimate, which it just introduced a month last Like AT&T, you also need to trade in a phone and commit to a 36-month installment plan, where the $1,000 is distributed as monthly bill credits, and if you decide to leave Verizon earlier, you’d be on the hook for what whatever is still due.

On perhaps a slightly brighter side, Verizon accepts any iPhone in any condition for trade-in here, so even if you have a broken iPhone 4 in a drawer somewhere you can trade it in and get the full discount. At least in this case, you can then trade or sell your newer phone somewhere else to get some extra cash.

Verizon declined to comment on why it is limiting this offer to only those who choose to switch to its highest priced plan.

The #1 Mistake People Make When Switching Cell Phone Carriers

T-Mobile isn’t much better than Verizon when it comes to who qualifies for its best deal. To get the best deal, you need to be on either the Go5G Plus plan it introduced in April or the more valuable Go5G Next option it added in August. Under either scenario, you would need to trade in a “qualifying” device with the $1,000 being put back as credits on your monthly bill.

Eligible devices for this deal include Pro model iPhones dating back to the iPhone 11 Pro as well as “Ultra” models of the Samsung Galaxy S21, S22, S23 or Note 20 plus the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and 4 and Z Fold 3 and 4. devices being traded in also need to be in good condition.

The good news for T-Mobile users is that its financing plans are significantly shorter than AT&T or Verizon’s, running 24 months instead of 36 months (and Go5G Next users have the ability to trade in their phones and upgrade after 12 month
