The remedy for sin is to return to God and accept the free grace that he offers. Those who do this will hit the bullseye and receive the prize. They are renewed and share in his divine life (2 Pet. 1:4).

Gambling focuses on the love of money and tempts people with the promise of quick and easy wealth.

Gambling, if done in moderation and only occasionally, is a waste of money but not necessarily bad. People waste money in all kinds of activities. Gambling is no more or less wasteful than watching a movie (in many cases), eating an unnecessarily expensive meal, or buying something worthless. Of course, the fact that money is wasted on other things is not a reasonable gamble. Money should not be wasted. By cutting wasteful spending, one can save money for future needs or give more to the Lord’s work. Gambling only adds to the waste.

Although the Bible does not mention gambling, it does mention events of “luck” or “chance.” For example, casting lots is God’s mandated method of choosing between a goat and a goat (Leviticus 16:8). Joshua cast lots to determine the portion of the land to different tribes, and the results were accepted as the will of God (Joshua 18:10). Nehemiah cast lots to determine who would live within the walls of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 11:1). The apostles cast lots to determine Judas’ successor (Acts 1:26). Each of these occasions confirms the truth of Proverbs 16:33, which says, “The lot is cast into the bosom, but every decision is from Jehovah.” Except for the gambling of the Roman soldiers at the foot of the cross (John 19:24), none of the instances of gambling in the Bible involve betting or moving goods.
