I hear this question quite often from my clients. For many, the belly is the part of the body that they care about the most. I am often asked if there are any specific movements or exercises that help lose weight around the midsection.

Crunches Fat Burn: How Many Crunches A Day To Lose Belly Fat?

But while there aren’t any magic moves you can make to lose weight in one specific area, there are a few things you can focus on that will help you lose belly fat over time.

I recommend focusing on weight loss in general – knowing that overall weight loss will also lead to weight loss in the midsection.

It is important to note that it is impossible to talk about weight loss without paying attention to diet. Counting what you eat and replacing foods high in empty calories like processed carbs and sugar with whole foods has helped many of my clients reduce bloating and shed extra pounds.

After getting your diet in order, pay attention to your workout routine. This is where you focus your efforts when it comes to exercising to reduce overall body fat and tone your midsection.

Lose Belly Fat Now And Get A Shredded, Strong Core

Endless crunches won’t do much if your abs are buried under excess fat. Cardio is the key to burning calories and losing weight. Biking and walking are two low-impact cardio exercises that I often recommend to clients. Walking is one of the most underrated forms of exercise when it comes to burning calories and losing weight. In fact, many people in our Start Facebook group credit a daily walk with helping them lose weight and shed inches off their midsection! Riding a bike or stationary bike is another great calorie-burning exercise. When you ride a bike, you use your core and lower body and get your heart rate up. If you have access to a stationary bike, try interval training by increasing the incline and speed. If you want to ride your bike outdoors, look for a trail with hills and play at your own speed.

Research shows that a combination of strength training and cardio works well for weight loss. Strength training helps you build muscle, which burns fat and boosts your metabolism. Also, muscle burns more calories than fat, so building muscle helps you burn more at rest, which will also help you lose weight. And many strength training exercises engage the core, which will help strengthen the abdominal area and increase muscle tone in the midsection. Try one of these strength exercises that build muscle and develop the core:

Finally, target your core by incorporating exercises that tone and strengthen your abs. Remember: abs are one muscle group you can train every day!

As a Pilates instructor, I recommend starting every abdominal exercise with a pelvic tilt. This exercise helps you align with your essence. By drawing your fleet toward your spine and engaging your core muscles, you train your body to work your core, not only with crunches, but with other exercises as well. In addition, engaging the core and engaging the deep abdominal muscles helps to flatten and tone the midsection.

Diet And Exercise Tips To Lose Belly Fat And Gain Muscle

I also recommend opting for ab workouts, such as mountain climbers, that work the whole body, not just the abs. Full-body movements will burn more calories, which will help you lose weight and strengthen all areas of your body.

Think of a can. The top of the can is your diaphragm and the bottom is the pelvic floor. On the outside of the can are the superficial muscles – the rectus abdominis and the external obliques. These are six-pack muscles.

Inside the can are deeper muscles called the transversus abdominis, the internal obliques, and the deep back muscles. Your inner thighs, glutes, shoulders, and neck also support your core.

Why train the core? If you only train the superficial six-pack muscles, you won’t get a flat stomach because you won’t be targeting every muscle group.
