White Cells And Blood In Urine Sample – Many things can cause blood in your urine (pee), including infections, vigorous exercise, and kidney disease. However, you should not ignore hematuria (blood in your stool). Health care providers can help you find the cause and the best treatment.

Urine can tell the story of health, with colors ranging from pale yellow to yellow to amber to red, with red indicating urine containing blood (hematuria).

Hematuria is the medical name for the presence of blood cells in the urine (pee). Health care providers label blood in the urine as gross, microscopic or dipstick.

Blood in the stool is a common finding. It affects about 2% to 30% of U.S. adults.

There can be many different causes of blood in your urine, some more serious than others. These conditions can include infections or stones, including:

In addition to these other conditions, cells that grow out of control in other parts of the body – what we know as cancer – can cause blood in your urine. These conditions include:

Usually, there are no symptoms other than blood in your urine. When this happens, your providers may say you are “asymptomatic.” If you have symptoms, this may include frequent or painful urination or urination that is urgent or has to happen “all of a sudden.” It can also be associated with nausea, vomiting, fever, chills or pain in the back or lower abdomen.

Although blood in the urine does not always mean that you have disease, it can be an important warning sign of a health problem.

Never ignore bloody urine. Contact your health care provider as soon as you find blood in your urine, as recognizing any problem is helpful.

During your appointment, your health care provider will take a medical history and perform a physical exam that may include a pelvic exam or a digital rectal exam. These things will help your provider better understand your symptoms. Your provider may order additional tests. These tests may include:

Treatment for blood in the urine depends largely on the actual cause of the hematuria. Your provider will use information gathered from your medical history, physical exam and test results to work with you to find the right treatment.

Treatment for the causes of hematuria, including medications and therapies, may have side effects. These vary according to the type of treatment.

However, untreated hematuria can lead to more serious problems, especially if the cause is more serious than vigorous exercise. A health care provider should treat any condition that causes blood in your urine. If the cause is something like cancer or kidney disease, early detection leads to early treatment. These things give good results.

People who may have blood in the urine are those with underlying diseases known to cause hematuria, such as urinary tract infections, urological anatomical abnormalities, family history of urological diseases and certain genetic conditions. For example, you may be at higher risk if you have kidney disease or kidney disease or a family history of kidney disease.

Urinalysis: What Is It, Testing, Indications, And More

You may be more at risk if you take certain types of medication, such as blood thinners and other pain relievers. This should not delay the same procedure if you see blood in your urine.

You can reduce the chances of having blood in your urine by avoiding some of these practices. It’s true that staying well-hydrated by drinking enough water — specifically, water — is good for your urinary tract and your body. If you are dehydrated, your pee is dark in color. If you are severely dehydrated, you may have bloody urine.

You should not ignore blood in your urine. It is important to contact your healthcare provider if you see blood in your urine or if you have other symptoms associated with hematuria.

There is no need to panic if you see blood in your urine, especially if you have a period or have just eaten something like beets. However, it is a good idea to call your health care provider. It’s best to catch any type of condition early, even if it’s just a UTI. Your provider will work with you to determine what is causing the blood in your urine and for effective treatment. Stable urine samples with a high urine density (SG) maintain nucleated cellular morphology. At best, however, some cellular structures (eg: erythrocytes) can shrink and appear deformed.

The Lowly Urinalysis: How To Avoid Common Pitfalls

On the other hand, dilute samples with low SG will result in poor preservation of cellular structures. This is because water enters the cells causing them to swell and eventually cause cell lysis. Erythrocytes and leukocytes can often be destroyed in dilute urine with low SG.

This video shows how well leukocytes are destroyed (which became dark in the video) in urine with a low SG (below 1.010).

Phase contrast microscopy. Original magnification 400x. In fact, the leukocytes on the slide were destroyed within 2-3 minutes.

The photographs (Figure 1) show the same microscopic field immediately after the preparation of the sample, and the leukocytes are perfectly visualized with their normal morphology and how these cells have gone how they changed completely within 2-3 minutes.

The use of phase contrast increases the ability to observe this. Using only the bright field, dead leukocytes are essentially ghosts, almost impossible to see.

Sample conditions such as SG (and pH) affect the quality of the information that can be seen during a micro-urinalysis. Leukocytes, erythrocytes and urinary casts are the most affected, they are destroyed especially in dilute urine with low SG and alkaline pH. Urinalysis is used to diagnose and manage a wide range of problems, such as urinary tract infections, kidney disease, and diabetes.

Urinalysis involves checking the appearance, concentration and content of urine. Abnormal urinalysis results may indicate disease or illness.

For example, a urinary tract infection can make urine look cloudy instead of clear. Increased levels of protein in the urine can be a sign of kidney disease. Abnormal urinalysis results often require multiple tests to uncover the source of the problem.

Is High Wbc (white Blood Cells) Count In Pregnancy Harmful?

Other tests, such as pregnancy tests and drug tests, may also rely on a urine sample, but these tests look for things that are not included in a standard urinalysis test. For example, a pregnancy test measures a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). Drug tests detect specific drugs or their metabolic products, depending on the purpose of the test.

If your urine is only being tested for a urinalysis test, you can eat and drink normally before the test. If you have other tests at the same time, you may need to fast for some time before the test. Your doctor will give you specific instructions.

Many drugs, including medications and over-the-counter supplements, can affect the results of a urinalysis test. Before having a urinalysis test, tell your doctor about any medications, vitamins or other supplements you are taking.

Depending on your condition, you can collect a urine sample at home or at your doctor’s office. Your doctor will provide a container for the urine sample. You may be asked to take the sample first thing in the morning because that’s when your urine is most concentrated, and abnormal results may be more noticeable.

To obtain the most accurate results, the sample may need to be collected centrally, using a fine-catch technique. This process includes the following steps:

In some cases, your doctor may insert a thin, flexible tube (catheter) through the urethra into the bladder to collect a urine sample.

A urine sample is sent to a lab for testing. You can return to your normal activities immediately.

For urinalysis, your urine sample is examined in three ways: visual examination, dipstick examination and microscopic examination.

Causes Of Blood In Urine (hematuria) For Females

A laboratory technician checks the appearance of the urine. Urine is clear. Cloudiness or an unusual odor may indicate a problem, such as an infection.

Blood in the urine can make it look red or brown. The color of urine can be influenced by what you have just eaten. For example, beets or rhubarb can add a red color to your urine.

A dipstick – a thin, plastic stick with a chemical coating on it – is inserted into the urine to look for abnormalities. Chemical tests change color if certain substances are present or if their levels are above normal. A dipstick test checks:

During this test, a few drops of urine are viewed under a microscope. If any of the following are seen at high levels, further testing may be necessary:

A urinalysis test alone usually does not provide a definitive diagnosis. Depending on why your doctor recommended this test, abnormal results may not require follow-up.

Your doctor may review the urinalysis results along with other tests – or order other tests – to determine next steps.

For example, if you are otherwise healthy and have no signs or symptoms of illness, slightly above-normal results during a urinalysis test may not be present.
