Which Vitamin Enhances The Absorption Of Calcium In The Body – Vitamin D is unique among vitamins because we can synthesize most of what we need in our skin. The sun is an essential ingredient in this process, so vitamin D is sometimes called the “sun vitamin.” However, the amount of vitamin D synthesized in the body is often not sufficient for our needs, so many people also need to take it from pure food sources.

Vitamin D synthesis in the skin begins with the conversion of cholesterol to 7-dehydrocholesterol. Then, in the presence of ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, 7-dehydrocholesterol is converted to vitamin D.

They are thus inactive until they undergo two hydroxylations—chemical reactions that add hydroxyl (-OH). The first hydroxylation takes place in hepate, creating calcidiol. This is a vitamin D circulating and blood form measured to assess a person’s vitamin D status. The second hydroxylation takes place in the kidneys and forms calcitriol, the biologically active form of vitamin D.

To recall from our discussion of blood calcium levels, one of the actions of parathyroid hormone (PTH) is to stimulate enzymes in the kidneys that make this last step into vitamin D. Active vitamin D increases the absorption of both calcium and phosphorus. in the intestine, as well as with PTH to reduce the loss of calcium in the urine and stimulate the release of calcium and phosphorus from the bone. In these ways, vitamin D plays a critical role in both maintaining blood calcium homeostasis and increasing the supply of calcium and phosphorus for bone mineralization. Vitamin D deficiency results in poor bone mineralization, with serious consequences in both children and adults, as we will discuss later on this page.

It is converted by reactions occurring first in the liver (making calcidiol) and then in the kidneys (making calcitriol, the active form). Once active, vitamin D works in several ways to maintain blood calcium homeostasis and increase the availability of calcium for bone mineralization.

Beyond its role in bone health, vitamin D has many other roles in the body. Cells throughout the body have vitamin D receptors in their nuclei, and by binding to these receptors, vitamin D is thought to regulate the expression of hundreds of genes. In particular, vitamin D is known to play important roles in cell differentiation and growth, immunity, insulin secretion and blood pressure. Studies have found

Between low circulating vitamin D levels and increased risks of chronic diseases, including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and multiple sclerosis. However, it has been difficult to determine if vitamin D deficiency actually contributes to the problem

In most people, vitamin D synthesis in the skin provides a large part of the body’s needs, and a little sun exposure can go a long way. Vitamin D researchers recommend that most people need between 5 and 30 minutes of sun exposure between 10 AM and 3 PM, at least twice a week, to collect adequate vitamin D. Syntheses. However, any element that decreases exposure to UV rays can prevent it. Vitamin D synthesis, including the following:

With so many factors affecting exposure to UV rays, many people are unable to synthesize enough vitamin D for at least part of the year. Because vitamin D is fat-soluble, the liver and adipose tissue can temporarily supply the body. In addition to this, the sources of purity and supplementation are necessary for the vitamin D requirement.

Only a few foods are naturally good sources of vitamin D. These include fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna, and lizards, as well as fish liver oil (eg, cod liver oil). Smaller amounts are found in egg yolks, cheese, and beef liver. Additionally, mushrooms grown in UV light can be a good source of vitamin D.

Most cow’s milk is fortified with vitamin D in the US and Canada, but other dairy products such as ice cream and cheese are not. Orange juice, soymilk and other plant-based fortified beverages, and breakfast cereal can all contribute to the dietary intake of vitamin D, although the amounts added vary significantly between products.

May be more effective at raising circulating vitamin D levels, but others have found no difference in the effectiveness of the two forms.

Human breast milk does not contain adequate vitamin D, so the Academy of Pediatrics recommends that breastfed infants receive a supplement with 400 IU of vitamin D per day until they are weaned from vitamin D-fortified formula or cow’s milk. Vitamin D supplementation may also be recommended for older children and adults, depending on dietary intake and sun exposure, but this should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

In children, vitamin D deficiency causes rickets, a disease in which the bones are soft, weak, and deformed. Rickets was very common in the US until the 1930s, when milk processors were asked to add vitamin D to cow’s milk. Milk immunization has virtually eliminated rickets from the US and other developed countries. But rickets still occurs in breastfed babies and babies raised on vegan diets that are not provided with other sources of vitamin D, especially if they have darker skin pigmentation.

Figure 9.13. Vitamin D deficiency in children causes rickets, a disease in which insufficient vitamin D leads to soft, weak, and misshapen bones.

In adults, vitamin D deficiency causes osteomalacia, a characteristic softening of the bones, reduced bone mineral density, and an increased risk of osteoporosis. Because bones are continuously remodeled throughout life, insufficient vitamin D limits the calcium available to repair bone tissue. Vitamin D deficiency can also cause mouth pain, as well as muscle weakness and pain, symptoms that can increase the risk of falls and fractures, especially in older adults.

Although vitamin D toxicity is rare, taking too much vitamin D in supplement form can lead to hypercalcemia, or high blood calcium. Hypercalcemia can increase damage to the kidneys and calcium deposits in soft tissues, such as the kidneys, blood vessels or other parts of the cardiovascular system. Synthesis of vitamin D from the sun does not cause vitamin D toxicity, because vitamin D synthesis is tightly regulated and decreases if the body has an abundance of vitamin D.

Also known as vitamin D3, this type of vitamin D is found through skin exposed to UV light and in animal-derived foods.
