When you sleep, you will have plastic tubes (lines or catheters) inserted into your neck, arms, and bladder. Before surgery, the surgical and anesthetic team will explain where the tubes will be placed.

Small tubes (lines) are inserted into your arms to give you fluids and medicines during and after surgery.

For most kidney transplant surgeries, you will also have a tube inserted into the veins in your neck so that stronger drugs can be given, if needed. This also allows the team caring for you to give you extra fluids if needed.

Can Anxiety Cause Kidney Problems

A tube (catheter) will be inserted into your bladder through the urethra. Most kidney transplant surgeons will also insert a larger plastic tube into the area around the kidney transplant to drain any tissue fluid after surgery.

Having a tube inserted into you can lead to bleeding, infection, or damage to other structures such as blood vessels or nerves. These complications are very rare.

Once you are completely asleep, the operation will begin. The blood vessels in your groin and the connections between the kidney blood vessels and your blood vessels will be found. There is usually one connection for the vein and one connection for the artery. Blood flow through these vessels will be temporarily stopped when suturing is done. Once the blood vessels are connected, blood will be able to flow through the kidneys and to your legs.

If the surgeon is satisfied with the blood flow through the kidney, he will make a connection between the tube that carries urine from the kidney (ureter) to your bladder. Usually, a short piece of soft plastic tube (a stent) is placed inside the ureter to help this small junction heal. This is removed a few weeks after surgery in a simple procedure. After that, your groin and abdominal muscles and skin are reattached.

Some patients have very poor bladder function or no bladder at all. Your surgeons will discuss with you how urine will come out of the transplanted kidney and be drained.

Usually, one kidney is all that is needed for a patient to have good kidney function after transplantation. However, sometimes the surgeon will recommend two kidneys from the same deceased donor – this is called a “double kidney transplant”. If your doctors think you may be suitable for a double kidney transplant, they will discuss this with you.

When a deceased donor has below-average kidney function, both kidneys can be placed into one patient to ensure that they have sufficient kidney function. This means a larger operation with a longer scar, i.e. scars on both sides. This operation is not suitable for everyone.
