Apocrine breast cancer: Apocrine breast cancer is a rare subtype of invasive ductal carcinoma that also begins in the cells that line the milk duct. What makes apocrine breast cancer different from other types of invasive ductal cancer are its cells when viewed under a microscope. Apocrine breast cancer cells look similar to those found in sweat glands in the underarm or groin area. Similar to metaplastic breast cancer, apocrine breast cancer cells are also believed to have undergone a change in shape, known as metaplasia. Treatments include lumpectomy, mastectomy, radiation therapy, and systemic therapy. Examples of systemic therapy include endocrine therapy, chemotherapy, and therapy targeting the HER2 protein [21]

Facts About Breast Cancer

There are also cases when it starts in the lobules of the breast (lobular), the glands that produce breast milk. And although rare, some cancers start in the lining of blood or lymph vessels or connective tissue.

Regardless of where the cancer started, doctors stress that it can spread to other parts of the breast, lymph nodes under the armpit, and even distant organs in the body (metastatic).

If the breast cancer is still confined to the epithelial basement membrane, we call it “in situ” or “non-invasive”. If it has already spread to other breast tissues, we consider it “invasive” or “infiltrating.”

As the name implies, this is a type of breast cancer that is found in the lining of the breast milk ducts; it also has not spread to other breast tissues.

Breast Cancer Stages: What Do They Mean?

One type of breast cancer, called invasive ductal carcinoma, which started in the lining of the breast milk ducts, has now spread to other tissues in the breast. Without treatment, IDC can spread to other organs of the body (metastasize) through the bloodstream or lymphatic system.

Reports (2) indicate that IDC is the most common type of breast cancer, accounting for up to 80% of breast cancer diagnoses.

Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer

ILC develops when abnormal cells found in the lobules or mammary glands infiltrate nearby breast tissues. If left untreated, invasive lobular carcinoma can spread to other parts of the body via the lymphatic system and bloodstream.

Since this type of breast cancer is “slow growing”, it may not respond well to chemotherapy, so the doctor may decide on hormone therapy(3).

Example: we have a Phyllodes tumor that starts in the connective tissue of the breast (stroma). Most cases of Phyllodes tumors are benign, but some may be malignant.
