What Type Of Breast Cancers Are There

Although ductal carcinoma is the most common type of breast cancer, there are many other types of breast cancer that affect millions of men and women worldwide. Let’s start by exploring and highlighting the differences and similarities between these types of breast cancer and understand each one individually. [1]

Hormones And Breast Cancer Risk: What’s The Connection?

Invasive breast cancer: These are types of breast cancer that have broken out and invaded surrounding areas and nearby breast tissues. Many breast cancers are invasive, but there are subtypes of invasive breast cancer [2] The two most common are:

Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC): Of all breast cancers, approximately 1-5% involve inflammatory breast cancer. Although it is often a type of invasive ductal carcinoma, its symptoms differ from most breast cancers [9] IBC develops rapidly and is often more aggressive than most breast cancers. Usually, a lump or tumor in the breast cannot be felt because it spreads in certain areas of the breast [10]

Paget’s disease of the breast: Paget’s disease of the breast is a rare breast cancer that affects the skin of the nipple or the surrounding area known as the areola. People diagnosed with Paget’s disease of the breast are also very likely (80-90%) to be diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ or invasive ductal carcinoma [14]

Metastatic breast cancer: Metastatic breast cancer is often characterized as stage 4 breast cancer, since it has spread to parts of our body, including the lungs, liver, bones and brain [15]. Cancer cells in metastatic breast cancer spread by invading nearby cells, breaking through the walls of lymph nodes and blood vessels that circulate them throughout the body.

Metaplastic breast cancer: Metaplastic breast cancer is a rare type of breast cancer that accounts for less than 1% of all breast cancer cases. Metaplastic breast cancer starts in the milk duct, very similar to invasive breast cancer. However, the type of tumor cells that develop during metaplastic breast cancer is what makes it different from invasive breast cancer. Metaplastic breast cancer tumor cells appear to have had a change in their shape (metaplasia) that makes them look similar to the soft and connective tissue in the breast. [17].

Adenoid cystic breast cancer: Adenoid cystic breast cancer is a rare subtype of invasive ductal carcinoma that accounts for less than 1% of all breast cancers. Its cells are very similar to those found in the salivary glands and saliva when examined under a microscope. Symptoms of cystic breast cancer are similar to those of invasive ductal carcinoma. Treatments include lumpectomy, mastectomy, radiation therapy, and systemic therapy. Examples of systemic therapy include endocrine therapy, chemotherapy, and therapy targeting the HER2 protein [20].

Apocrine breast cancer: Apocrine breast cancer is a rare subtype of invasive ductal carcinoma that also begins in the cells that line the milk duct. What makes apocrine breast cancer different from other types of invasive ductal cancer are its cells when viewed under a microscope. Apocrine breast cancer cells look similar to those found in sweat glands in the underarm or groin area. Similar to metaplastic breast cancer, apocrine breast cancer cells are also believed to have undergone a change in shape, known as metaplasia. Treatments include lumpectomy, mastectomy, radiation therapy, and systemic therapy. Examples of systemic therapy include endocrine therapy, chemotherapy, and therapy targeting the HER2 protein [21]

Conclusion: Breast cancer research has yet to become a well-informed field, not only in developing countries, but also in developed countries such as the United States. We not only see ignorance of symptoms in women, but also in men due to social judgments. It is important to fight against these social “standards” that stand in the way of breaking down the norms surrounding breast cancer. It is important to fight together and break the stigma surrounding breast cancer.

Types Of Breast Cancer: Common Types, Other Types, Stats

Hormone therapy: Used only against cancers that grow in response to hormones, hormone therapy is used to prevent hormones from reaching cancer cells.6

Biopsy: This is the removal of a sample of tissue that can be examined under a microscope to look for further abnormalities in the breast tissue. 8

Ultrasound: A form of breast screening where images of your breasts are created using sound waves. 8

Axillary lymph node dissection: It is performed to determine and remove lymph nodes that may be affected by the spread of cancer.

Did you know there is more than one type of breast cancer? Each type develops and responds differently to treatment. Here’s what you need to know about breast cancer.

In general, the types of breast cancer depend on two factors: where it started and whether or not it has spread to other areas.

According to reports (1), most breast cancers begin in the breast ducts (ductals), the tiny tubes that carry milk to the nipples.

Facts About Breast Cancer

There are also cases when it starts in the lobules of the breast (lobular), the glands that produce breast milk. And although rare, some cancers start in the lining of blood or lymph vessels or connective tissue.

Regardless of where the cancer started, doctors stress that it can spread to other parts of the breast, lymph nodes under the armpit, and even distant organs in the body (metastatic).

If the breast cancer is still confined to the epithelial basement membrane, we call it “in situ” or “non-invasive”. If it has already spread to other breast tissues, we consider it “invasive” or “infiltrating.”

What Type Of Breast Cancers Are There

As the name implies, this is a type of breast cancer that is found in the lining of the breast milk ducts; it also has not spread to other breast tissues.

Breast Cancer Stages: What Do They Mean?

DCIS is an early-stage cancer and, according to experts, is highly curable, usually with surgery. However, if not detected or treated promptly, it can become invasive ductal carcinoma.

One type of breast cancer, called invasive ductal carcinoma, which started in the lining of the breast milk ducts, has now spread to other tissues in the breast. Without treatment, IDC can spread to other organs of the body (metastasize) through the bloodstream or lymphatic system.

Reports (2) indicate that IDC is the most common type of breast cancer, accounting for up to 80% of breast cancer diagnoses.

A doctor may still recommend surgery in many cases of IDC, but may also suggest other options such as chemotherapy before or after surgery. This largely depends on the stage of the cancer.

Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer

ILC develops when abnormal cells found in the lobules or mammary glands infiltrate nearby breast tissues. If left untreated, invasive lobular carcinoma can spread to other parts of the body via the lymphatic system and bloodstream.

Since this type of breast cancer is “slow growing”, it may not respond well to chemotherapy, so the doctor may decide on hormone therapy(3).

Example: we have a Phyllodes tumor that starts in the connective tissue of the breast (stroma). Most cases of Phyllodes tumors are benign, but some may be malignant.

Another type of breast cancer that starts elsewhere is angiosarcoma, which starts in the cells that line the lymph or blood vessels.

Lobular Breast Cancer

There are different types of breast cancer. Generally, doctors identify them based on where the cancer started and whether or not it has spread. Please remember to identify
