Splenectomy is a surgical procedure to remove your spleen. The most common reason for splenectomy is to treat a ruptured spleen, which is often caused by an abdominal injury. Splenectomy may be used to treat other conditions, including an enlarged spleen that causes discomfort (splenomegaly), some blood disorders, certain cancers, infection, and noncancerous cysts or tumors.

These include vaccinations against Haemophilus influenzae type B, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Neisseria meningitidis. Ideally, these vaccinations should be given at least 2 weeks before surgery. Talk to the healthcare team about any vaccinations you may need to reduce your risk of serious illness while you recover. When you enter the hospital, practice hand washing and wear a face shield when asked.

You should be able to go home after 1 to 2 days if you had keyhole surgery, or after 5 to 7 days if you had open surgery.
