It can happen if we go beyond the fasting-repentance foundation. So before we go on our twenty one day fast, let’s ask God to make us aware of our sins so that we can ask for forgiveness and turn from our sins.

Before we go to God with our reasons for fasting, we must first ask for forgiveness of our sins. Before we can seek to get what we want…or intercede for lost people…or ask for the breakthrough we so desperately need, we must make sure that every known sin in our lives has been covered by the blood of Jesus.

Sin can prevent God from hearing our prayers. If we want God to listen to us when we fast, we must repent – confess our sins to Him, ask for His forgiveness, and forsake our sins.

It is important that we allow God to give us clean hands and a pure heart if we want to enter into his presence with our reasons for fasting.

In the last two posts, we saw how important it is to repent of our sins. Today we take the first step towards repentance – a prayerful self-examination of our lives, looking at our past history and considering our actions and intentions. “Therefore, whoever knows what is right and does not do it, it is sin for him” (James 4:17, NASB).

Prayer And Fasting

1. Ingratitude. Have you received blessings from God that you are not thankful for? Have you thanked God in everything, regardless of the situation, because he is good and kind and compassionate and faithful? Ephesians 5:20 says: “And for everything give thanks to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (NLT).

2. Lack of God’s love. God calls himself a jealous God. (Ex. 20:5, 34:14; 5. Moses 4:24; 5:9, 6:15; Josh. 24:19, etc.). When we give our heart and love to another love, to an idol that we raise in his place, it offends him.

3. Not reading and reading the Bible regularly. Ayyub said: “I treasure the words of his mouth more than my daily food.” (Job 23:12, HCSB). If you were in a court of law accused of neglecting to read your Bible, would the dust on your Bible testify against you? What about the history of your Bible application – the date it was last opened will testify against you?

Write down the times when you were not happy with the Word of God for weeks or longer. Or maybe you’ve read your Bible, but you’ve read a very large volume and read it in such a prayerless, non-meditative way that later, you didn’t know what you just read. Of course you did not know what God was telling you with this.

4. Without prayer: Without prayer is a sin. 1 Samuel 12:23 says: “Far be it from me to sin against the Lord, not to pray for you” (NIV).
