What Is The Purpose Of Mapping A Network Drive – Systems thinking requires a shift in our perception of the world around us. In order to build a new multidimensional thinking framework, we must find the dynamics and interconnectedness of the system at play. These are system mapping tools — they provide system exploration, communicate understanding, and allow for the identification of knowledge gaps, intervention points, and insights.

As discussed in Chapters 1 and 2 of this series, I have been teaching systems thinking related to activated change for many years. While there are some great digital tools out there (like Kumu), every novice and experienced systems thinker should use an analog system mapping tool as well. When I say ‘analog,’ I mean pen-and-paper style — no digital product — so get your writing ready.

It’s funny how hard some people find it to get back to the analog approach. I have tested and refined these rapid system mapping tools, and use them constantly in my own practice, and with UnSchool and Disrupt Design. I have tried to be as articulate as possible in explaining this approach, but to be honest, I am usually explaining while people are doing, making it a very iterative learning experience. I recommend that once you have read all of this, give a quick system map to experience the discovery process first hand. Here’s an example:

I always get people to start exploring the arena of complex problems with a cluster map, or as I like to call it, a ‘brain dump’ map, which is how it feels like you do.

It is important to note that although similar, this is not a mind map. There is nothing wrong with a mind map, it’s just that the approach you take to a mind map is very different from the approach and purpose of a system map.

In the cluster map, we drop the topic, question, or arena down the middle of the page, then freely associate nodes (elements in the system). There are no words or ideas that are wrong or right here, because everything is related. We quickly move from one part to another, diving into an exploration of the elements that make up a system along with all the relationships and connections that feed into its maintenance.

Once all the elements, agents, actors, nodes, components (whatever you want to call the parts you put on the page) are mined, the key part is drawing the connections and relationships between them. This is where you can start teasing out all the obscure parts and looking to develop a more complex view of the system you’re exploring.

From this, insights can be drawn, and potential intervention points can be identified. While it may seem simple (and it really is, once you get into it), I find many people get stuck and want to impose chaos on what is a dynamic system. Another thing I’ve noticed is that many people feel the need to have a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer to exploration. However, cluster mapping is just that – an exploratory experience, trying to mine your collective knowledge and / or your team to find out what is happening in the arena that you are looking to understand or make changes in.

Ways To Use Mind Maps For Business Growth

Once you’ve created a cluster map, you can move on to more detailed maps, such as Interconnected Circle mapping.

Practicing systems thinkers know how hard it is to get to the root of the causal relationship of the problem area, let alone determine what the intervention area is. I adapted the Interconnected Circle Map to help people think through and explore the system. It is the individual map that allows for deep exploration of relationships and cause and effect in system dynamics.

It sounds way more complicated than that. A map should empower you to see the parts and the whole and their relationships. It allows synthesizing key flows in the system, and provides tools to enable their emergence.

This is a great map to make on the refined area you identified through your cluster map. Start by documenting all the parts of the system, then cut or change them to pieces of paper that you can move around. Get another piece of paper and draw a big circle. Next, start placing small parts around the outside, thus editing, movement, and synthesis. You start to draw connections between parts, and through this, you will uncover dynamic relationships as well as identify areas of more relevance or importance to you. intervention.

As a practicing creative change-maker, I use system mapping tools like this all the time when I want to identify divergent parts of a problem set and find unique areas to develop interventions. I also use it to gain clarity on complexity, and find it useful when working in teams or collaborating because it puts everyone on the same page.

These are just a few examples. There are many ways to map systems, such as behavior in time graphs, causality maps, and feedback loops. The latter is very popular as a way of explaining how the system works. I am particularly interested in applying system thinking to solve problems and examining how it can lead to a much deeper level of understanding than normal research or exploration process can – especially in design thinking, where the answer is often very strong. But, we need to understand before we can build. This is why systems thinking and mapping tools like these are fundamental to the Disruptive Design Method, and can also be easily applied to any creative problem solving goal.
