Despite differing responses from a wide spectrum of intellectual thought, the Christian faith is not uncertain about the answer to the meaning of life. The answer is found in the Bible, most likely in the book of Colossians.

The Purpose Driven Life By Rick Warren (deep Book Summary)

Colossians was written by Paul. This four-chapter treatise is very theological. As Paul often does in his letters, when he addresses the church at Colossae, he deals with specific problems facing the church. The big problem in Colossae is heresy. I describe a seminary professor’s definition of heresy as “pernicious error.” We don’t know exactly what this scandalous error was, but it undermined Jesus’ divinity.

The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is fully God – equal in deity with the Father and the Holy Spirit. The divinity of Jesus is an important theme in Colossians. But how does this teaching relate to the meaning of life? This is the sentiment of a Psychology Today quote I found, in which the author said, “Even if there is a God, and even if he had an intelligent purpose in creating us, no one knows what this purpose might be or what it might be. Especially meaningful.

The apostle Paul disagrees. Look at Colossians 1:16: “For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities, all things were created through Him and for Him.” We think Jesus is absent in the Old Testament and then suddenly appears in the New Testament with the virgin birth at Christmas. wrong Jesus is fully God, so he had no beginning. Paul teaches that Jesus created all things. Jesus is the agent of creation, the God-man who created all things, who rules and reigns, without beginning or end. It’s fine. But what does intellectually subscribing to this fact do you existentially? Consider the last part of Colossians 1:16: “All things were created through him and for him.” This is where you come in. You are part of “everything”. You are made by Jesus and by Jesus. This is the meaning of your existence. The Bible teaches that the ultimate meaning of life is not status, success, position or position, but a person. Jesus He is the meaning of life.

The Christian’s Intellectual Life

Building on and borrowing from other themes of Scripture, men were created for the glory of God. Greatness means “heavy” or “burden”. God has created us to live in a way that reveals His weight in everything we say and do. We find satisfaction in glorifying God.

The meaning of life from a Christian perspective is well summed up in the first question and answer of the Westminster Shorter Catechism, which states:

You were created to glorify God. You glorify God by obeying Him; You enjoy Him by glorifying Him. Obedience to God and enjoyment of God are interrelated. This may sound divinely authoritarian and insecure: Did God create us for His glory? Isn’t that selfish and insecure? No, because “God, God alone is the highest good of man.” 1

God is not just sovereign and powerful, but good and content. He is glorious. He is the creator and you are the creation. He is the potter, you are the clay. The creator and the potter have the right to determine how things work. This glorious God has determined that living for Him – knowing Him, enjoying Him, obeying Him, glorifying Him – is the path to the meaning of life. Far from being a killjoy, it is the highest good of man. Money, status, or success cannot compare to knowing God. You can keep running from God hoping to find fulfillment through worldly means, but you will be running in vain. God has created your heart in such a way that it always feels empty and miserable inside, apart from being in a right relationship with Him.

Religion Gives Life Meaning. Can Anything Else Take Its Place?

Tom Brady is an NFL quarterback who is considered one of the greatest football players of all time. He is married to a supermodel and together they are worth billions of dollars. While Tom Brady now has more than three Superbowl Championship wins on his resume, he said something profound in an interview on 60 Minutes after winning his third Superbowl ring that has always stuck with me. The interviewer said, “With all the money, fame and accomplishments in his life, we were surprised to hear this from Tom Brady.” And what did Brady say? Brady said, “Why do I have three Superbowl rings and still feel like there’s something bigger going for me?” He continues, “. . . I think there must be more to it.” The interviewer asks, “What’s the answer?” Brady responds, “If only I knew.”

A common criticism of Christianity is that it is too restrictive. This limits non-believers from expressing their authentic self, so they say. Non-believers feel that Christianity imposes too many restrictions on how to live, what to do with the body, and how to behave morally. Therefore they can never be seen to be Christians, because it violates their true freedom. The thought of living for the glory of God seems to destroy personal freedom.

Autonomy is good. It’s good to have desires and feelings and want to express yourself. But this way of thinking misses the purpose for which man was created. It assumes that you know what is better for your life than God. It reveals an overwhelming view of man’s wisdom over God’s. Living for Christ will not destroy your life, but will be the beginning of a real and meaningful life. I encourage you to turn to God today.

God’s purpose for your life is far greater than your personal fulfillment, your peace of mind, or your happiness. It will last longer than your family, your ministry, your dreams and aspirations. To know why you were put on this planet, you must start with God. You were born by His purpose and by His purpose.

So how do you find created intentions? You have only two options. Your first option is speculation. This is what most people do. They guess, they guess, they theorize.
