What Is The Most Common Type Of Leukemia In Adults – Childhood leukemia is a blood cancer that originates in the bone marrow. The bone marrow is the soft, spongy center of the long bones that produces the three most important blood cells: white blood cells to fight infection; red blood cells that transport oxygen; and platelets that help blood clotting and stop bleeding. When a child has leukemia, for some unknown reason the bone marrow begins to produce white blood cells that do not mature properly but continue to reproduce. Normal, healthy cells only reproduce if there is enough space to fit them.

The body can regulate cell production by sending signals when to stop. In leukemia, these cells do not respond to the signals to stop reproducing, regardless of the available space. These abnormal cells reproduce very quickly and do not function like healthy white blood cells to help fight infections. When the immature white blood cells, called blasts, begin to crowd out other healthy cells in the bone marrow, the child experiences the symptoms of childhood leukemia.
