It is important to note that there is a difference between water baptism and salvation. Water baptism is not the same as receiving salvation or salvation. The Bible is clear that salvation is a free gift from God and comes only through faith in Jesus. We are baptized in water, not to be saved, but because we have already received the gift of salvation. Salvation precedes water baptism.

For by grace you have been saved through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV) Therefore in Christ Jesus you are all children of God by faith, because you who were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Galatians 3:26-27 (NIV)

Water baptism is a symbolic act. The symbolism of water baptism is best explained in Colossians:

What Is Baptism And Why Is It Important?

“If you have an initiation rite, you have already gone through it by submitting to baptism. Going under the water is the burial of your old life; coming out of it is a resurrection, God raising you from the dead. Just as He did Christ. When you put away your old sin- Stuck in the dead, you were unable to respond to God. God made you alive—with Christ! Think of it! All sins forgiven, the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant canceled, and Christ crucified.” Colossians 2:12-14 (MSG)

Water baptism symbolizes the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We enter the water to symbolize entering into a relationship with Jesus Christ, coming as we are, clothed in our old life with all its habits, mindsets and behaviors. Allowing yourself to be immersed in water by someone else during the process of water baptism is a symbol of willingly surrendering your life to God’s rule as an act of love, obedience, and faith. God sees faith in our vulnerability and humility and is pleased.

What Is The Purpose Of Water Baptism? The Difference Between The Baptism Of John And The Baptism Of The Holy Spirit

Water itself symbolizes the grave. As you are baptized, your old self dies and is buried just as Jesus died and was buried. In the same way, just as Jesus rose from the dead, so you too rise up from the water as a symbol of new life in Him, freed from the guilt and shame of your past as a new creation. By faith, the water washes away anything that makes you unclean and unworthy of your Father’s love.

It is important to note that water is in no way magical, but like everything in the Christian life, water baptism is a powerful act of faith, and any act of faith pleases our Heavenly Father. Water baptism represents our journey from death to life and from the old to the new using the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Therefore we were buried with him through baptism into death, so that even as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live a new life. Romans 6:4 (NIV) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, a new creation has come: the old has gone, the new has come! 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)

Another precious and powerful result of water baptism is that you will come out of the water – clean, free, empowered, accepted and loved as a child of God. As mentioned earlier, water baptism does not save you, but it is proof that you are already saved and set free. Water baptism makes a public announcement to God and others that you no longer own your life. Your life now belongs to God and as such, you look to His leadership, not your own.
