What Is The Largest Organ In Body – The liver is a very strange organ, because it looks exactly like a nice, red, slightly slippery mushroom. It doesn’t look like it can do anything, but it actually does more work than any other part of you.

The liver is an organized group of tissues that are specialized in allowing certain substances to filter out that are needed in other parts of the body. At the same time, it cleans all the blood that passes through it.

What Is The Largest Organ In Body

An adult liver weighs about 1.4 kg/3.3 lbs, and it is located in the upper right part of the abdomen, just below the right lower rib cage. The liver has two main parts, called lobes that do eight different jobs between them. One and a half liters (3 pints) of blood flows through the liver every minute.

What Are The Heaviest Organs In The Human Body?

The liver is connected to two large blood vessels, one (called an artery) carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart, the other (called a vein) carries blood rich in digested nutrients from the intestines.

The liver helps you by removing substances from your blood that are produced as a result of digestion, but that if left there can be toxic. The liver also cleans blood that has just been enriched with vitamins and minerals during digestion. This is the important step between the intestine, where the vitamins and minerals are drawn out of the intestine, and the blood vessels, where they are sent around the body.

The liver makes a liquid called bile that is very good at breaking down the fat that has reached it from the intestines. Bile is also called digestive juice, and it is stored until needed, in the gallbladder. The liver also works to break down carbohydrates (starch) from bread and so on and turn them into a substance called glucose which is the main source of energy (the fuel) that makes our cells work.

When the body needs energy quickly, the liver already has a partially digested supply at hand, which it can process very quickly and release the glucose into the bloodstream.

Skin: Facts About The Body’s Largest Organ And Its Functions

Anything that the body does not want that is solid is sent out into the intestine, where it can be flushed out when you go to the toilet. Anything that’s liquid goes to the kidneys for another round of filtration and eventually passes out in your pee.

So the liver is really good at breaking down food and safely getting rid of anything that might be harmful elsewhere.

Scientists also use the liver when giving medicines. The liver is the main site where the pills are broken down and where the active ingredient in them is released into the blood. So, for example, the liver is the cause of pain relief.

What Is The Largest Part Of The Human Digestive System?

It may seem as though we should already have identified all the structures in the human body, even if we don’t know the function of every cell and organ.

But that assumption could be very wrong, if the authors of a study recently published in the Nature journal Scientific Reports are correct.

Between the spaces in our bodies—under the skin, lining the gut and lungs, surrounding blood vessels and fascia between muscles, and more—is a fluid-filled network of tissues.

What Is The Largest Organ In Body

The idea that there is tissue and fluid in these spaces is not new; interstitial fluid is one of the significant types of fluid in the body, even though we didn’t know it existed in these structures.

But the authors of the new study say this tissue has a uniform structure and function throughout the body that makes it an organ. By that definition, it could be the largest organ in the body, taking up a larger volume than even our skin.

This organ can help protect the rest of our organs and tissues. It can also explain the spread of certain cancers, as well as how a number of diseases develop in the body.

A newly discovered organ, the interstitium, is seen here beneath the topmost layer of skin, but is also found in tissue layers that line the gut, lungs, and urinary system, as well as those surrounding blood vessels and the fascia between muscles. The organ is a body-wide network of interconnected, fluid-filled compartments supported by a network of strong, flexible proteins. Illustration by Jill Gregory Finding a new organ

Scientists previously thought that the area between other organs and tissues in our body was largely solid, consisting of structural support proteins called collagen, as well as elastin-binding proteins with more stretch.

Interstitium Organ Might Be The Largest In The Human Body

But analysis using a newer type of imaging technique (called probe-based confocal laser endomicroscopy) revealed that interconnected fluid-filled sacs run through the collagen and elastin structures.

Previous attempts to look at this tissue under a microscope made it impossible to see these interconnected fluid-filled spaces and overall structure. Slicing it open caused the fluid to drain, emptying the sacs and causing them to collapse, leaving only the supporting proteins behind.

Looking at things in a new way allowed scientists to see the structure of the tissue without causing it to collapse, fundamentally changing the way we understand our insides, Dr. Neil Theise, professor in the Department of Pathology and co-author of the study, explained in a press release.

Skincare Myths: Your Skin Isn’t Your Largest Organ

It appears that the interstitium may have one or more uniform functions. It can help scientists determine if it really is an organ, since organs usually serve at least one specific purpose.

There are several ways that the network of interstitial fluid and connective tissue can better explain how the human body works.

The fluid-filled sacs in this tissue can help interstitial fluid travel throughout the body. It is important because the fluid in this network is the largest source of lymph, which is a critical part of the immune system.

“This finding has the potential to drive dramatic advances in medicine, including the possibility that direct sampling of interstitial fluid could become a powerful diagnostic tool,” says Theise.

A better understanding of this interstitial network can help us understand why skin wrinkles as we age, why limbs become stiff, and how inflammatory diseases spread. It may also explain why cancers that spread into the space between organs are more likely to appear in other parts of the body.

As something that surrounds our blood vessels and organs, the interstitium can help protect them from tearing and can help absorb shocks that might otherwise damage parts of our body. It’s even possible that studying these spaces could help reveal what acupuncture does or doesn’t do in the body.

It will take time and research before the medical community at large decides to treat the interstitium as an organ or not.

But the possibility that this network of fluid and tissue is an entirely new organ reveals that even in parts of ourselves we thought we understood, we still have much to learn.

Read preview Scientists have long argued that the skin, which makes up about 15 percent of a person’s body mass, is the largest organ in the human body. But now researchers from New York University’s School of Medicine appear to have stumbled upon what they believe may be an even larger organ. Called the interstitium, it is not solid like the heart or liver, but a network of fluid-filled spaces found throughout the body to protect the rest of our organs.

According to team leader Dr. Neil Theise overlooked the massive organ, which has been hiding in plain sight, because human tissue is currently being studied by treating the thinly sliced cell samples with chemicals. The technique, which drains the fluid from the tissue and destroys its collagen structure, led experts to classify the interstitium as just dense connective tissue.
