Listen, I understand where this idea is coming from. “Six weeks!? And how many thousand dollars?” And that’s before running any new business. “And what am I going to do to sell those six weeks?”

Based on this information, we focused their message on the basic concepts of what a B-Corp should be, instead of the name itself. If we don’t learn this truth, they can spend a lot of time promoting an idea that doesn’t connect with their audience.

A few years ago, we worked with a startup that was trying to make online communication more secure by offering a “security verification” process. This certificate will be paid by a person (or couple), so that they can express their feelings about dating as a normal and safe person to date.

When we asked a couple of guys if they would pay for this service, they said it was too bad to prove they weren’t a creep. It is better to pay them. They are the good people after all! They also indicated that they would think twice about meeting someone who asked them to do so.

On the other side of the equation, women say they feel comfortable asking someone to go to the doctor’s office. It’s like calling them a creep. Not a good way to start a strong relationship. Needless to say, product-market-fit was problematic.

Listen, I know this isn’t a new conversation. Mike wrote about the value of market research on the blog almost two years ago. It’s something that’s always going up. I think this “move fast and break things” approach is fueled by the cult-like business culture emerging from Silicon Valley companies like Facebook and Uber.

Is it down to six weeks? not really. If we have no other responsibilities, the research can be done quickly. But most of the companies I talk to have never had a strong digital marketing plan in their entire history, and have spent months looking at businesses, so why rush it?
