There are many different types of tubes used for clinical pathology testing, the most common of which are shown in the image below, and are: green tip tubes containing lithium heparin (good for statistical samples in large animals), red tip without anticoagulant, purple peaks with potassium EDTA as anticoagulant and blue peaks with citrate as anticoagulant. Their use for clinical pathology testing is shown in the figure below, including the sample taken from whole blood and used for testing. All samples for chemistry and coagulation testing should be centrifuged as soon as possible to obtain serum or plasma, and not left as whole blood, when the samples are sent to laboratories for testing. EDTA tubes for hematology tests should not be centrifuged at all and should be stored as whole blood. Some of the chemistry tubes contain silicone gel, which makes it easier to separate the serum or plasma from the cells. These are more commonly used in large and small animal practice because it can take some time for large animal samples (especially horses) to clot and release the serum from the clot. Although serum is generally the preferred and traditional sample for chemical testing, in large animals we often use heparinized plasma (from a green-tip tube), for easier and faster extraction of plasma from cells, as well as higher plasma yield, especially for stat. samples. Clinicians also collect blood into 2 heparin microcontainers (0.5 ml volume) from each animal for exotics (eg birds, small rodents, reptiles) and small animals with expected low blood yield (eg puppies, kittens, small dogs or cats) .
