Why are we here? What is the purpose of our earthly life? According to the Bible, your life on earth is not about you. It’s not about proving your worth or earning your salvation. Life is about God. Your life is about glorifying God by joining His mission in the world. If you have put your faith in Jesus, you are already worthy before God because of what Jesus has done for you. Now, having been made a new person, you have been called to be one of God’s great plans.

When Jesus came, he chose ordinary people to be his disciples. The people he chose to change the world were not highly educated, rich, or powerful (Acts 4:13). They were not religious. They were servants and laborers (Matthew 4:18-20; Luke 5:27-28). At the end of his time on earth, he gathers his followers and gives them a great purpose. It is called the Great Commission.

Matthew 28:18-20 Jesus came and said to his disciples, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. The church will advertise opportunities to help in certain ministries, and someone may invite you to consider a role, but it is up to you to decide and evaluate your own opportunities. If you find a need that interests you, don’t hesitate to volunteer.

God chose to fulfill his purpose in the world through people, giving us the opportunity to grow and develop as we do. This includes not only our time and skills but also our resources.

Giving to God is different from tithing to the church. The way you give is between you and God (Matthew 6:2-4), You are not accountable to any authority. The Bible teaches to give in proportion (1 Corinthians 16:1-2), but there is no set percentage required to please God (Mark 12:41-44). If you have been blessed with much, give back more. If it’s less, give less. You have the freedom and responsibility to give what you put in your heart to give (2 Corinthians 9:6-7) – although 10% is a reasonable starting point.

Matthew 6:19-21 Do not store up treasures on earth, where moths eat and rust destroys, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasure in heaven, where moth and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there your heart’s desire will be also.

God owns everything we have, so we use everything to honor Him (Psalm 24:1). Giving shows that his priorities are more important than our own. Giving God’s service is an act of trust (1 Timothy 6:17) and prayer (2 Corinthians 8:5). It is a way to make a difference to others in the world and to things that matter forever (1 Timothy 6:18-19).

To make it easier for Christians to understand, we are talking about “full” Christians. The growth cycle consists of three stages.

In short, your purpose in life is to travel and help others travel. As we do this, Jesus’ mission to make disciples will be fulfilled.

But your purpose in the world is not just to go to church. Living a godly life is important. But being a good person is not your purpose on earth. You can start living out all your goals as a follower of Jesus when you start making disciples. There are people in your world who need your help. Do you want to invest in them?
