Solution: Function Of Liver Role Of Liver In Our Body With Diagram

The liver, the largest gland in the body, a spongy mass of wedge-shaped lobes that performs many metabolic and secretory functions. The liver secretes bile, a digestive fluid; metabolizes proteins, carbohydrates and fats; stores glycogen, vitamins and other substances; synthesizes blood clotting factors; removes waste and toxic substances from the blood; regulates blood volume; and destroys old red blood cells.

Liver tissue consists of a mass of cells that contain bile ducts and blood vessels. Liver cells make up about 60 percent of tissue and perform more metabolic functions than any other group of cells in the body. A second group of cells, called Kupffer cells, line the smallest channels of the liver’s vascular system and play a role in blood formation, antibody production, and the absorption of foreign particles and cellular debris.

Each day, the liver secretes about 800 to 1,000 ml (about 1 quart) of bile, which contains bile salts needed to digest dietary fats. Bile is also the environment for the excretion of some metabolic products, drugs and toxic substances. From the liver, a system of ducts leads bile to the common bile duct, which flows into the duodenum of the small intestine and connects to the gallbladder, where it is concentrated and stored. The presence of fat in the duodenum stimulates the flow of bile from the gallbladder to the small intestine. Senescent (used) red blood cells are destroyed in the liver, spleen and bone marrow. The pigment – bilirubin, produced in the process of hemoglobin breakdown, enters the bile, giving it a characteristic greenish-orange color, and is excreted from the body through the intestines.

Liver cells synthesize many enzymes. As blood flows through the liver, both from the portal vein and the hepatic artery, cells and enzymes are filtered. Nutrients that enter the liver from the intestines are modified into forms that can be used by the body’s cells or stored for future use. Fats are converted into fatty acids and then into carbohydrates or ketone bodies and transported with the blood to the tissues, where they are further metabolized. Sugars are converted into glycogen, which remains stored in the liver until needed for energy production; it is then converted back into glucose and released into the bloodstream. The liver produces blood serum proteins, including albumin and several clotting factors, and delivers them to the blood. The liver also metabolizes nitrogenous waste and detoxifies poisonous substances, preparing them for excretion in urine or feces.

What Is The Real Function Of The Liver ‘function’ Tests?

A typical symptom of liver dysfunction is jaundice – yellowing of the eyes and skin caused by excessive levels of bilirubin in the blood. Jaundice may result from an abnormally high degree of destruction of red blood cells (hemolytic jaundice), abnormal uptake or transport of bilirubin by liver cells (hepatocellular jaundice), or blockage of the bile ducts (obstructive jaundice). Abnormal functioning of liver cells may result from hepatitis, cirrhosis, tumors, vascular obstruction, or poisoning. Symptoms may include weakness, low blood pressure, easy bruising and bleeding, shaking, and fluid buildup in the abdomen. Blood tests may reveal abnormal levels of bilirubin, cholesterol, serum proteins, urea, ammonia and various enzymes. A specific diagnosis of a liver problem can be made by performing a needle biopsy.

The liver is susceptible to many other disorders and diseases. Abscesses may be caused by acute appendicitis; those occurring in the bile ducts may result from gallstones or may occur after surgery. The parasite that causes amoebic dysentery in the tropics can also cause liver abscesses. Various other parasites found in various parts of the world also infect the liver. Liver cancer is common and occurs mainly as a secondary tumor arising from other parts of the body. Glycogen storage diseases, a group of inherited diseases, cause the accumulation of glycogen in the liver and inadequate supply of glucose in the blood. Some medications can damage the liver, causing jaundice. Most probably know that the heart pumps blood, the brain thinks, and the lungs breathe. However, most people probably don’t know what the liver does.

Unlike more familiar organs, the liver has many functions that extend throughout the body. In a sense, it’s the handyman who makes sure everything runs smoothly in the background.

Above you can see 5 of the liver’s many roles. These include your body’s factory, transportation system, energy storage system, and waste management system.

Figure 3: Glycogen: the liver as a battery. Your body stores energy from carbohydrates in the form of glycogen, almost like a battery, so you can run faster.

Since you’re not eating all the time, your body needs a way to store the energy from the chocolate bar you eat so it can use it while you run.

However, your body also needs some energy that it can use for a quick “recharge”. This is where the liver comes in handy.

Fatty Liver Disease

Your liver stores energy in the form of “glycogen”, or starch. This allows the liver to quickly provide the body with energy during exercise.

Figure 4: Vitamins: the role of the liver. Your liver produces bile, which your body needs to absorb fat and vitamins from food.

You’ve probably heard that foods contain vitamins. To get some of these vitamins into your body, you need your liver.

What Is Function Of Liver In Body

The liver produces carriers, almost like trucks, that are necessary to absorb four key vitamins: vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K.

Can Twists “detox The Liver”?

Vitamin A is essential for vision, vitamin D is essential for strong bones, vitamin E protects cells as antioxidants, and vitamin K helps form blood clots.

When the liver stops working, patients can become ill due to insufficient vitamin intake despite eating a normal diet.

Figure 5: Liver and cholesterol. Your liver helps produce fats and cholesterol necessary for your cells. It also absorbs excess LDL cholesterol.

Although too much cholesterol can cause heart disease, it is actually necessary for survival. Cholesterol is a key part of cell membranes that hold cells together.

Human Liver Anatomy And Function

Your liver is responsible for transporting cholesterol throughout the body and regulating its levels. It sends out vehicles like VLDL to absorb excess cholesterol, which returns as LDL.

NASH is a condition caused by the presence of fat in the liver. This is a subset of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Over time, fat in the liver can lead to hepatitis, the final stage of which is called NASH.
