Some people fast religiously, almost without instruction. If so, find your purpose. God may be calling you to fast. He certainly has a real goal in mind. Most of the time, when I decide to fast, God has already placed it on my heart for a definite reason.

And when you fast, do not be treacherous like the hypocrites, for they have defiled their faces so that it may appear to others that they are fasting. Verily, I say unto you, they shall receive their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that your fasting will not be seen by others, but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (Matthew 6:16-18) Fasting is setting your heart on purpose to succeed and grow spiritually. #LiveYielded Click to Change Food Types

The Wisdom Of Fasting Weekly

For thousands of years, biblical fasting has been the practice of abstaining from spiritual food. If you are used to “three meals a day,” fasting as a spiritual practice may sound strange. But fasting was a very common religious practice when the Bible was written.

In his book “Hunger for God,” John Piper writes: “Christian fasting, which begins, is a longing for God.” Christian fasting is not only a known effect of supreme satisfaction in God, it is also a chosen weapon against any power of the world that would take away that satisfaction.”

But how does biblical fasting work—and how can one do it today? In this book, we will discuss what every Christian should know about fasting: what fasting is and how it works.

Some Christians use the word “fasting” to refer to abstaining from entertainment in addition to food, such as TV, the Internet or, for married couples, sex. You may know people who have gone on a “social media” or “screen fast” for spiritual reasons. For the purposes of this article, we will focus on the Christian fast: not eating.

Examples Of Fasting In The Bible — Daniel Fast Journey

Fasting may sound like fun today. But in the culture of Jesus, it was unusual for a religious person not to fast.

The disciples of John the Baptist, the most important prophet who paved the way for Jesus’ ministry, often fasted. Likewise the Pharisees, a group of religious leaders who opposed the teachings of Jesus and plotted to kill him!

During Jesus’ ministry on earth, his followers did not fast. But Jesus decided that he would fast when he returned to the Father (Luke 5:33-34). In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gave his followers instructions on how to fast, especially telling them not to pretend they are fasting like others of their culture (Matthew 6:16-18).

Fasting is mentioned throughout the Bible, in the Old Testament (written before Jesus’ ministry, death and resurrection) and the New Testament (written after). However, when Christians discuss fasting, two important passages often come up: one from an Old Testament prophet and one from Jesus himself. But all these passages do not give us details on how to avoid eating. Instead, they all think about the heart of
