Student Interest Survey

I usually just read but I know I have a lot of math teachers following me and so I created a math one this year too.

I also know that we are not sure what the beginning of the year will look like. I’m working on an early-year item because we’ve been told we *can* start again in July. We’re still not sure about ANYTHING. However, I’d rather be prepared now than freak out later. In the middle of getting a few things done, I made sure I had a digital version in case we studied remotely for the first six weeks. I really hope that doesn’t happen, but we never know.

I have created printable and digital versions of both inventories. I gave this away (or I would have given it away) during the first week of school. I give students as much time as they need to fill them out. I read them, studied them, made notes, and kept them all year. At the end of the year, I ask them to fill out another one. We compare the two to see if anything has changed.

This was created in PowerPoint. The printable version is saved as a PDF. Digitally saved as PowerPoint. I always have people asking about Google Slides. The great thing about PowerPoint is that you can open it IN Google Slides. Not everyone uses Google Slides, so that’s why I made it in PowerPoint. But yes, you can use it in Google Classroom! Just attach the file and have students open in Google Slides!

The printable version is straight forward. I printed them on white card stock. I just find they hold up better throughout the year. I put it in one of my beautiful Rae Dunn File Folders. lol. They last all year!

I hope you find this useful! They have worked great for me every year and I have no doubt that the digital version will work just as great! Student interest in reading surveys are an important way to learn information about your students that you may not already know. It can be a great tool to help you plan lessons, find motivational texts to add to your classroom library, and to reach seemingly disinterested students. It’s just…one size does not fit all. We all have different children, different ages, and different needs. An inventory that I find very useful, someone in the hall may not like at all! So I wanted to find a different reading inventory that was free. Hopefully, you’ll find one that works for you and your students.

This inventory is simple and aimed at younger students. I created it with first graders in mind. I know that I will read the question out loud and need a simple answer.

This one comes from Ginger Snaps. I would say that it is for students who have read various genres and will understand different types
