Okay, so now you’ve tested for low estrogen and you’re wondering, how and why did this happen to me if I’m not in menopause yet! Let’s discuss the reasons below so you can work on finding the root causes and rebuilding your wonderful estrogen.

Fat is essential for building hormones. The body cannot produce adequate hormones if you do not include healthy fats in your diet.

Whether it’s physical, emotional or food stress, it doesn’t matter. Stress puts the body into fight-or-flight mode, where it thinks about survival and not reproduction. Producing reproductive hormones is not a priority for the body when it is stressed. As a result of chronic stress, the adrenal glands may not produce enough DHEA – the precursor hormone to estrogen. So if DHEA is low, estrogen may also be low. (by the way, this is why I LOVE DUTCH Complete because it will tell you this!) It is normal and expected that estrogen levels drop as a woman ages and stops ovulating; however, if the adrenals are healthy and all the glands that make up the HPA axis are communicating correctly, the adrenals should be producing enough hormones to be healthy. In premenopausal women, estrogen is produced in the ovaries and adrenal glands. After menopause, the ovaries produce less estrogen and it becomes the job of the adrenal glands to provide estrogen or to provide the hormone precursors (DHEA) that the body uses to synthesize estrogen.

When nutrients are deficient, we must always ask – why are they deficient? Are you eating a poor diet with no nutrient dense foods? Do you have low HCL or digestive enzyme levels so you can’t break down and absorb food properly? Are there pathogenic organisms in the GI tract that “steal” those nutrients or damage the intestinal lining where those nutrients are absorbed? (This is why we ALWAYS start with GI testing before hormone testing)

It is very important to avoid sugar, caffeine and tobacco as all three can disrupt the endocrine system and lead to hormonal imbalance. Caffeine appears to have different effects on estrogen at different stages of the menstrual cycle (sometimes lowering estrogen and sometimes increasing estrogen levels). Refined sugar stresses the body and causes hormonal imbalance because it is inflammatory, leads to spikes in blood sugar and depletes nutrients (especially magnesium).

Undiagnosed gluten sensitivity can also affect estrogen levels. Studies have linked gluten sensitivity (and celiac disease) to amenorrhea (no periods), infertility, and diminished ovarian reserve. If gluten (the protein found in wheat, barley, and rye) is causing estrogen problems, following a gluten-free diet can help balance your estrogen levels.

If a woman has recently given birth or is breastfeeding, her estrogen levels are expected to be low. Similarly, if a woman is on birth control pills, which suppress ovulation, her estrogen levels (and progesterone levels) will usually be low [if they are not, the pill may not work well for her].

There are so many reasons why a hysterectomy is medically necessary, but there are some downsides. Because it removes your ovaries, it means your body is no longer able to produce large amounts of estrogen.

As you can see from the root causes above, unless you have a medical condition like ovarian antibodies, are on birth control or are pregnant/nursing, or have had a hysterectomy, there is a lot we can do to support our estrogen . Therefore, when it comes to supplements, unless the symptoms are extremely severe, I will usually suggest that a client start by addressing their stress, as well as dietary and lifestyle factors, then move on to herbal formulas that promote estrogen if these changes do not improve symptoms. , and then talk to their doctor about bioidentical hormones if nothing else helps.
