What Can Help Your Kidneys Function Better – Every March, Great Care takes part in National Kidney Month to help people become kidney health champions any time of the year. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDKD) says people can start by being role models for healthy living.

“Help protect your family from kidney disease and its causes – diabetes and high blood pressure – by adopting healthy lifestyle habits,” the NIDDKD says.

“Be active for 30 minutes or more on most days. If you are not active now, ask your healthcare provider about the types and amounts of physical activity that are appropriate for you,” the Institute says.

Foods To Avoid With Kidney Disease

Eating healthy is also key to better kidney health. The NIDDKD says the first step to eating well is choosing and preparing foods with less salt and sodium. This helps control blood pressure, as diets should contain less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium each day.

“Sodium (part of salt) is added to many prepared or packaged foods that you buy in the supermarket or in restaurants,” the Institute says. “Cook food from scratch instead of eating prepared foods, ‘fast’ foods, frozen meals and canned foods with higher sodium content. When you prepare your own food, you decide what goes into it.”

Other nutrition-related tips include using spices, herbs and sodium-free seasonings instead of salt, and checking for sodium on the Nutrition Facts label of food packages.

“A daily value of 20 percent or more means the food is high in sodium,” says the NIDDKD. “Try low-sodium versions of frozen dinners and other convenience foods.” Rinse canned vegetables, beans, meat and fish with water before eating. And look for food labels with words like sodium-free or salt-free; or low, reduced, or no salt or sodium; either unsalted or lightly salted.”

The Institute says early treatment can help protect the kidneys, because people with early kidney disease usually have no symptoms.

“That is why it is important that people with diabetes or high blood pressure get tested. To help prevent heart attacks and strokes, keep your cholesterol levels within the target range.”

The National Kidney Foundation helps promote kidney disease prevention and awareness through its community initiative KEEP. The program educates the public about the kidneys, risk factors for kidney disease and the steps to take to keep the kidneys healthy and reduce the risks.

The kidneys are incredible organs located on either side of the spine, below the ribs. They perform several essential functions that maintain overall health and well-being. Each day, the kidneys process approximately 180 liters of blood, eliminating waste and excess water, flushing out toxins, balancing electrolytes, producing hormones and maintaining the functioning of body processes. Eating a balanced, healthy diet and staying well hydrated is usually enough to keep the kidneys healthy, in the absence of disease.

Every single organ, from the brain to the liver, requires water to perform its vital functions. The kidneys need water to excrete urine, which is the main waste product that allows the body to remove unwanted toxins. When water intake is low, urine output is low, which can lead to kidney dysfunction. It is important to drink enough water so that the kidneys can flush out waste products effectively.

If the kidneys fail to remove toxins and waste from the system, they will eventually build up in the body and hinder the normal functioning of the kidneys, liver and other vital organs, resulting in fatigue, abdominal pain, headaches and retention of water. and other problems. The buildup of toxins and waste can also lead to the development of kidney stones, which is one of the most common problems in both adults and children.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a long-term condition in which the kidneys do not work as well as they should. This page provides information about chronic kidney disease, its treatments and what to expect.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) means your kidneys don’t work as well as they should. They cannot remove waste products from your body. Damage to the kidneys’ filtering system can also cause blood and proteins to leak into the urine. This is not always visible, but can be determined with a urine test.

The term ‘chronic’ means that it is a long-term condition. It does not necessarily mean that your kidney damage is serious, as many cases of chronic kidney disease are mild and can be treated with the help of your GP and without hospital intervention.

Healthy Kidney Tips

Most people are diagnosed by a blood and urine test. You may be having these tests as part of a routine checkup or because you are at risk for developing chronic kidney disease.

Once you have been diagnosed, your doctor will determine which stage of CKD you are in. This is done by measuring the amount of creatinine, a waste product that builds up in kidney disease. Your doctors can use this to estimate how well your kidneys are working. This may be called your estimated glomerular filtration rate (e-GFR). It is based on how quickly your kidneys clean your blood and is measured in milliliters per minute

Most people with chronic kidney disease stages one to three can manage the condition themselves with their GP and do not need specialist input from kidney doctors.

CKD can worsen slowly over time, although it remains stable for the majority of people and only a very small number of people require renal replacement therapy such as dialysis. It is unusual for kidney function to improve dramatically after your kidneys have been damaged, but this does depend on the cause of the problem.
