Coal still leads the charge in terms of electricity, representing 35.4% of global power generation in 2022, followed by natural gas at 22.7%, and hydroelectricity at 14.9%.

Over three quarters of the total electricity produced by coal in the world is used in just three countries. China is the main coal consumer, accounting for 53.3% of global coal demand, followed by India at 13.6%, and the United States at 8.9%.

Burning coal – for electricity, as well as metallurgy and cement production – is the world’s single largest source of CO2 emissions. However, its use in electricity generation has actually increased by 91.2% since 1997, the year the first global climate agreement was signed in Kyoto, Japan.

In 2022, renewable energy, such as wind, solar, and geothermal, represented 14.4% of total electricity generation with a remarkable annual growth rate of 14.7%, driven by large gains in solar and wind. In contrast, only an anemic 0.4% is managed by non-renewable energy.

With hydroelectricity moved into the renewable column, together they accounted for over 29.3% of all electricity produced in 2022, with an annual growth rate of 7.4%.

As well as unrest at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, the shutdown of France’s nuclear fleet to tackle corrosion in the safety sprinkler systems of four reactors led to a 4% drop in global consumption, a year on year.

The amount of electricity produced by nuclear power in that country fell by 22% to 294.7 TWh in 2022. As a result, France went from being the world’s largest exporter of electricity, to being a net importer.

Turning mechanical energy into electrical energy is a relatively simple process. Modern power plants are engineering marvels, to be sure, but they still work on the same principle as the first generator invented by Michael Faraday in 1831.

Countries around the world are increasing the proportion of renewable energy in their energy mixes. The bad news is, they are not doing it fast enough to meet the Paris Agreement goal of keeping the global average temperature rise to “well below” 2°C above pre-industrial levels, and so close as possible to 1.5 °C.

Limiting global warming depends on a rapid transition from fossil fuels to more sustainable energy sources. Yet many countries continue to rely on coal-fired power to meet growing energy demand.

Achieving a stable, sustainable and affordable global energy system will require a collaborative and systematic approach to solving problems and taking advantage of opportunities such as the new technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, according to the latest edition of the World Economic Forum, Fostering an Effective Energy Transition report.

The report includes the Energy Transition Index (ETI), which compares the energy sectors of 115 countries and analyzes their readiness for energy transition.

It does this by benchmarking countries’ energy systems based on an “energy triangle”, which includes energy security and access, economic development and growth, environmental sustainability and how well they are set up to succeed in the future.

There is little change since last year at the top of the table, with Western and Northern European countries continuing to dominate. Sweden retains first place, followed by Switzerland, Norway and Finland.

The report says that despite the diversity of the top performing countries in their basic energy mix, systems and basic resources, they all share certain characteristics, showing a combination of technical advances and effective policy formulation and implementation.

Countries with high ETI scores also performed well in terms of their readiness for energy transition, with Finland at the top of that list, followed by Denmark, and Austria in third.

Again, these countries have things in common: stable regulatory frameworks, innovative business environments that can attract investment and a strong political commitment to energy transformation.
