Role Of Private Sector In Agricultural Development – The goal of transforming global food production systems while reducing environmental impacts and improving well-being remains a complex agenda and characterized by trade-offs. To move from the “business as usual” situation requires simultaneous transformation at multiple levels, socio-ecological systems, economy, business and political-institutional. Agroecological food systems are promoted as a paradigm shift towards transitioning current multi-level food production practices and ensuring regenerative use of natural resources. While much emphasis has been placed on transforming socio-ecological, landscape and production systems, there has been limited attention to the role of the private-public sector in achieving agro-ecological food systems. Although business and private sector stakeholders are increasingly aligning with the principles of agri-ecological food systems, there are also growing concerns among actors about motivation, incentives, investment and transparency by the private sector.

Agroecological Transitions for Building Resilient and Inclusive Agricultural and Food Systems (TRANSITIONS): The Private Sector Incentives and Investments (PSii) project funded by the European Union aims to contribute to filling persistent knowledge gaps. The goal of the overall TRANSITIONS program is to better align policy, investment and technical support to enable a climate-informed agri-environmental transition by farmers in low- and middle-income countries. This will be achieved through the development and adoption of holistic metrics for the performance of food and agricultural systems, inclusive digital tools and transparent engagement of the private sector to drive incentives and encourage investment.

A dynamic private-public ecosystem likely has some challenges, but it also provides new opportunities to accelerate simultaneous agro-ecological transitions by mobilizing investments, creating incentives, de-risking and balancing trade-offs to contribute to more economically efficient, socially just and ecological food systems.

The project has three main components that aim to assess incentive structures and metrics, integrate metrics into transparency tools, and build capacity of local institutions and co-mobilize investments. The following figure shows the specific objectives, key partners, activities and guiding research questions.

This TRANSITIONS PSii project specifically focuses on innovative pathways for long-term incentives and transparent engagement of the private sector, with the target outcome that private and public sector actors jointly develop and undertake innovations in incentive structures, business models, investments and capacity building for agri-environment ( see next picture).

To achieve the project objectives, PSii is divided into four interrelated phases as illustrated in the figure below.
