Researchers who conducted the survey of 2,000 adults claim that many people are unable to identify their thigh bone, known in layman’s terms as the thigh bone, from the fibula, which is the shin bone.

They found that very few people, only 37 percent of respondents, correctly identified the two bones in the lower arm as the radius and ulna.

Furthermore, it also turned out that one in almost 20 people mistakenly believe that the big leg bone is called the humerus.

Fewer than three in 10 were aware that the pubis is part of the thigh bone, while 29% have no idea that the smallest bone in the body is in the ear.

But it’s not just the names of the bones and where they sit in the body that leaves Brits scratching their heads as only 36% know that magnesium is an essential nutrient for bone health, alongside calcium.

A spokesman for the supplement, Vitabiotics Osteocare, which commissioned the research, said: “Our bones are not just there to hold our bodies, they are the foundation of our health and well-being.

“Although the names of individual bones may not be known, what is really important is an understanding of how we can maintain bone health throughout our lives.

“Bones have many roles – as well as supporting the body structurally, they also protect our vital organs, allow us to move, are the place where blood cells are formed and also serve as a storage area for minerals.

And 32 percent regularly buy dairy-free products, with seven percent following a completely dairy-free diet.

It turned out that only 20% are aware that whole grains are a good source of magnesium, while only one in four was aware that avocados contain a large amount of the mineral.

Many also had no idea that spinach (60 percent), peanuts (80 percent) and dark chocolate (81 percent) are good sources of magnesium.

Researchers from OnePoll also found that 83% of people agree that it is important to look after their bones in their 20s and 30s.

But nearly three in 10 are unaware that good nutrient intake is important, while 25% don’t think good calcium intake during your younger years is important.

And only 26 percent think they did enough in their younger years to make sure their bodies stay strong enough as they get older.

A spokesperson for the Royal Osteoporosis Society added: “We want people to look after their bones in the same way they look after their hearts.

“And we actively encourage everyone under 30 to build their bone reserves through diet and exercise to give them the best chance of strong bones later in life.”
