Most Important Part Of A Gaming Pc – For this post, I’m taking a step away from the music and focusing more on the design of my work. To give some context, when I was 13, my brother built his first gaming computer. We grew up playing Wii and Xbox together, and there wasn’t much else in the sleepy town of Newport (pop. 4,600). Watching him build it and being in awe of the results, I knew I wanted to do the same. Two years later, at Christmas, he helped guide me through the process and build my own. Since I entered college, I began to spend less time on video games, but they are still a hobby of mine, and the experience of building my own computer was enough inspiration for me to dedicate myself to this project.

This post will be less about the topic of the infographic and more about my design process and how I went from concept to completion.

First, there was the prompt. As part of an infographics class I’m taking, our second project was based on an “alternative narrative”. My first infographic, 2019: Year Of The Dreamers, was pretty straightforward with timelines, statistics, and other direct methods to convey the story I was telling. This time we were required to present a story using other methods, such as a step-by-step process or a diagram.

At first, I wanted this graphic to show the process of building a computer step by step. However, I ran into a minor problem. too many steps. Due to the variety of work done on different parts from different brands, there was too much information to properly fit into one small infographic. I didn’t want to create a graphic that didn’t fully explain the process, because at that point it wouldn’t be really accurate or efficient, so I chose to make a diagram showing the individual parts.

Once I settled on this idea, I was ready to start designing. I wanted to focus on an isometric illustration style, so I found some isometric illustrations that looked similar to what I was going for and started making a mockup of what I wanted the final product to look like.

After getting some feedback on the basic idea, I realized there were a few areas I needed to improve on, the most important of which was finding the angle. A diagram that shows all the parts is great, but if there was no reason for the diagram to be made in the first place, what’s the point?

At this point, I decided to make infographics less generic and more game-specific, which informed all of my design choices. Instead of designing a fairly generic looking PC, I tailored it around my own gaming PC. All the parts you’ll see in the diagram are modeled after parts of my computer, from the case to the processor. This personal connection really helped me get more invested in the project and reminded me why I built my own computer in the first place.

Going forward, I spent most of the time designing each part and trying to find clever ways to put them together. My first instinct was to lay out the parts in isometric fashion, with guides showing where the parts fit together. However, I ran into a problem here. After looking around for some advice, I decided the best way to approach this would be to move the pieces closer together, yet keep enough space to differentiate them without taking up too much space on the page. Without the natural space to keep the pieces distinct and separate, I had to find a new way to keep them from blending.

After fiddling around, I came up with the idea of ​​putting a colored outline on each part and a colored glow around it to make the parts easy to distinguish. I used these colors when I made the lines that led to the descriptions of each part, keeping some cohesion between the copy and the graphics.

After refining the main illustration, I created smaller isometric illustrations for each point in the Why? section below the introduction – a set of arrows in different directions to represent different customization options, a dollar sign to indicate cost-effectiveness, a heart to represent the longer life of the computer, and the logo of Valve’s Steam platform, which is the distribution. An optional service for most PC gamers.

Finally, to add a little more hard data to the mix, I’ve put together a comparison chart on the rest of the page to highlight the differences between this year’s popular GPUs. For this, it made sense to focus exclusively on GPUs, as the GPU is one of the most important parts to consider when building a PC geared around gaming.

With all the content, I just had to work out the overall style of the chart. I chose a blocky, square typeface (literally called “Square Font”) for the headings due to the computer aesthetic, and used the sans serif typeface Avenir for a cleaner, more modern finish. I chose a fairly neutral shade of blue for the background, as I associate such colors with PC technology, no doubt partly influenced by the Intel brand, one of the largest processor manufacturers in the industry. I layered some gradients on top of the blue – a slight change in color without going overboard – and topped it off with a tech-y digital wave photoshop brush to add some texture and depth.

With the graphic essentially done, I fixed all the bugs I could find and made sure it was polished and Voila! As always, designing this infographic was a huge undertaking and I spent hours upon hours on it, but with some inspiration and personal connection, I enjoyed every second of the process. Even those last few seconds when I finished it at 3:00. Tuesday evening. Here in Kentucky, where systems are built, there is a saying that goes something like “there are a million ways to skin a cat,” implying that there are many different ways to do something. Building a gaming PC and choosing the components that go inside is certainly no exception to this age-old adage. But if there are a million ways to build a gaming PC, and a million parts to choose from, which one is more important than the others? And how does one prioritize components when building budget gaming PCs?

There are many things that can be prioritized depending on your use case. For example, if you’re editing video, your first priority should be the number of CPU cores to ensure your rendering speed is acceptable and timeline cleanup is smooth. For streaming, you want to prioritize both the CPU and graphics card equally, which is part of why systems built for streaming are so expensive. But if you mainly want to play games, the most important component of a computer is the graphics card.

A gaming PC’s graphics card is the component that allows you to play graphics-intensive games (and no, a minecraft isn’t included in the “graphics-intensive” category). I’m talking about games like Call of Duty. Modern Warfare, Valorant and Rainbow Six. Siege: Games that require legitimate horsepower to run well. Without a dedicated graphics card installed in your hardware, your computer will struggle to load modern games that use 3D graphics and high-definition textures, and may not even run them at all. For this reason, it is the most important component of a gaming PC and will usually be the most expensive. Our systems always prioritize graphics performance, and our Red system uses Nvidia’s next-generation graphics card, the GTX 1650 SUPER 4GB. The graphics card is also the most power-hungry component of the computer, so the next priority for the system is the power supply.

The power supply is the heartbeat of any PC. It is what secures the internal components and ensures the reliability and durability of the system. A low-quality power supply can fail unexpectedly, taking other components with it, if the current or voltage it supplies to your motherboard, graphics card, or storage drives spikes. With this in mind, a high quality power supply is always recommended when building a gaming PC.
