Baptism In Jesus Name

“Is water baptism really necessary today?”, “Is it a requirement for salvation?”. These are some questions I had about water baptism. In this post, I will answer these questions and tell you from the word of God what is the difference between the Baptism of John and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. Before we begin, I would like to define our key terms. The Hebrew word for “baptism” is Mikveh and the Greek word for it is “baptizo.” In both languages, the meaning is “to sink”. I would define “Water Baptism” (in today’s context) as: Water baptism is when a person is immersed in water as a public confession of his or her faith in Jesus Christ. I would also like to define what the “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” is: The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is when the Holy Spirit falls upon a believer, immersing him or her. As a result, the believer receives spiritual empowerment as well as the spiritual gifts of speaking in tongues and prophesying.

Water baptism was first introduced in the ministry of John the Baptist. As revealed by the archangel Gabriel, John was operating in the spirit and power of Elijah. This means that there are similarities in the ministry of Elijah and the ministry of John. One similarity is that both their ministries were about turning the hearts of the people of Israel to God.

“But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, because your prayer was heard and your wife Elizabeth will give birth to a son, whom you will name John. You will have great joy and delight and many will rejoice at his birth, because he will be great and distinguished in the eyes of the Lord; and shall never drink wine or strong drink, and he shall be filled and empowered to act by the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb. He will turn [from sin] many of the children of Israel to love and serve the Lord their God.

It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the HEARTS OF THE FATHERS TO THE CHILDREN, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous [which is seeking and submitting to the will. of God]–to make ready a people [perfectly] prepared [spiritually and morally] for God.

What Does It Mean To Drink God’s Living Water?

The disciples asked him: “Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” He answered and said, “Elijah is coming and will restore all things; but I tell you that Elijah has already come and they did not recognize him, but did to him as they pleased. Even the Son of Man will suffer at their hands .” Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them about John the Baptist.” (MATTHEW 17:10-13 AMP)

“At the time of offering the evening sacrifice, the prophet Elijah approached [the altar] and said: “O Lord, God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel (Jacob), let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I I am your servant, and I have done all these things according to your word.

Answer, O Lord, answer, that this people may know that you, O Lord, are God and that you have turned their heart [to you].

Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, even the stones and the dust; he also licked the water in the trench. When all the people saw him, he fell on his face to the ground; and they said, “The Lord is God! The Lord, he is God!” (1 KINGS 18:36-39 AMP)

What Is The Purpose Of Baptism In The Christian Life?

Another similarity is that they were both forerunners, preparing the way for another prophet after them (in the case of Jesus, He is a Prophet and also God) – Elijah prepared the way for Elisha, and John prepared the way for Jesus. As a precursor, the water baptism that John performed was only a shadow of the substance to come. It actually tells of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit that would begin on the Day of Pentecost after Jesus had ascended to the Father, after His death and resurrection. Water baptism, as the verse below says, is a “baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,” but in itself it has no power to save people from their sins. The only way to receive complete forgiveness of sins and be saved is to believe that Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior.

THE VOICE OF A MAN CRYING IN THE DESERT, ‘PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT!’

[i.e., the demand for changing the old way of thinking, turning away from sin and seeking God and His righteousness]. And all the land of Judea and all the people of Jerusalem went continually to him; and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River while confessing their sins. John wore clothes of camel’s hair and had a [wide] leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. And he was preaching, saying, “After me comes He who is mightier [mightier, nobler] than I, and I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thongs of his sandals [even as his slave ].

As for me, I baptized you [who came to me] only with water; but He will baptize you [who truly repent] with the Holy Spirit.”

Bread, Wine And Water

Jesus himself was baptized with water. The reason for this is because He was living in the identity of a Man (although He is also God) at that time period when John’s ministry was still ongoing. Just as Jesus lived under the Law and fulfilled it perfectly, He also allowed Himself to be baptized with water to live righteously as a Man in the context of God’s dispensation at that time.

“Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan [River], to be baptized by him. But John tried to prevent him [protesting forcefully], saying: “I am he who should be baptized by You, and do You come to me?”

But Jesus answered him: “Allow him now; for this is the proper way for us to fulfill all righteousness.”

Although Jesus himself was baptized in water, water baptism is not a requirement for a believer to be saved. I can clearly show you this through an incident that happened while Jesus was on the cross:

“One of the criminals who was hanging [on a cross next to Him] continued to revile Him, saying, “Aren’t You the Christ? Save yourselves and us [from death]!” But the other rebuked him, saying: “Don’t you even fear God, because you are under the same punishment? We are suffering justly, because we are getting what we deserve for what we have done; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom!” Jesus said to him: “I assure you and solemnly tell you that today you will be with me in Heaven.” (

LUKE 23:39-43 AMP) If water baptism was a requirement to be saved, Jesus would surely have asked for a basin of water to immerse the robber in after this conversation took place. However, the only thing that happened was: The thief repented and believed in Jesus. That was enough for the robber to have a place in heaven. Additionally, see what the Apostle Paul had to say about how he was saved:

“~” Now, why are you late? Arise and be baptized and wash away your sins by calling on His name [for salvation].” (ACTS 22:16 AMP)

Did you notice that he said “be baptized” but it is “calling on His name [for salvation]” that leads to the washing away of your sins? So why are we still baptized with water today even though it is not a requirement to be saved? The early church during Peter’s time continued to baptize new believers in water.

The apostle Paul also believed in baptizing new believers in water and baptized several people during his ministry.
