Kidney Is Located Where In The Body
A thin, flexible tube passes through the opening and into the kidney. This is called a nephrostomy tube or catheter. Urine flows through a tube, a sac outside your body. The bag has a tap so you can release it. Even if you have a nephrostomy, you can pass urine normally.

The kidneys are located at the back of the body, on either side, under the ribs. Kidneys are bean shaped. They are above the level of the belly button. Kidneys filter your blood to get rid of waste products and turn it into urine (pee).
Urine travels from each kidney to the gallbladder through a thin tube called the ureter. The cell is in the lower part of the stomach (stomach). This area is called the pelvis.
When you are ready to urinate, the urine exits through the urethra. The urethra opens in front of the vagina or at the end of the testicles.
A nephrostomy may be necessary if cancer or cancer treatment affects one or both ureters. If you urinate, the urine (pee) cannot flow from the kidney into the gallbladder. This causes the kidneys to produce urine. When this happens, the kidneys can gradually stop working.

Depending on whether one or both ureters are blocked, you may need 1 or 2 nephrostomy tubes. If you only have 1 tube, this is called a unilateral nephrostomy. If there are tubes in both ureters, this is called a bilateral nephrostomy.
Cancers that start in the stomach (pelvis) block the ureters. These include cancer:
Sometimes cancer that starts in another part of the body spreads to the pelvis and causes swelling. This can block 1 or both ureters. You usually have a scanner to find out where the blockage is.
Your doctor will explain how long the nephrostomy tube will last. If the acne treatment clears the cysts, they can remove it. Sometimes the doctor places a tube called a stent inside the urethra. The stent keeps the urethra open so it is no longer blocked. This means that the nephrostomy tube can be removed.
The Effects Of Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma On The Body
A nephrostomy tube is left in place unless surgery or a stent clears the blockage. The doctor replaces it every 3 to 4 months to prevent blockage. Nephrostomy tube replacement is a very quick procedure.
A local anesthetic is usually used to place the nephrostomy. Most people only stay in the hospital for a short time. A doctor usually practices in an X-ray (radiology) department. A doctor called a radiologist uses X-rays and ultrasound to help place the nephrostomy tube in the kidney. It can last 30-60 minutes.
A doctor or nurse will place a thin tube called an IV in your arm. They can use this to give you:
You lie flat on your stomach on the X-ray table. When you’re relaxed, the doctor injects some local anesthetic into the vein on the back.
Kidney Health Quick Start Guide
If the area is empty, the doctor gently inserts a fine needle into the skin and into the kidney. A guide wire is then inserted through the needle. The doctor uses a guide wire to place the nephrostomy tube into the kidney. A suture or dressing is used to hold the tube in place.
A nephrostomy tube may also have a locking system. Coils inside the kidney to hold the tube in place. The doctor connects the tube to a drainage bag outside the body that collects urine (pee).
When the doctor inserts the nephrostomy tube into the kidney, you may feel discomfort. Tell them if you are in pain or worried. They may give you painkillers through a cannula in your arm.
You are treated in a hospital ward and usually have to stay in bed for several hours. Nurses will check that the nephrostomy tube is leaking urine (pee). They will also check your blood pressure, pulse and temperature. Sometimes the doctor may do tests to check the position of the tube in the kidney. This is done by injecting a dye called contrast into the tube. This is shown by X-ray.

You may have some blood in your urine for 2 days after the nephrostomy is placed. Blood in the urine is called hematuria. The placement of the tube may be uncomfortable. You will have regular pain medication. Any pain or discomfort usually improves after a week.
Doctors and nurses check you regularly for any problems. So, if there is any, it can be repaired immediately.
While you are in the hospital, nurses check the tube and empty the bag regularly. They will show you how to look after a nephrostomy. They can show you how to empty and change your diaper bag and change your clothes. They will also tell you how long you should wait before showering or bathing.
You can change the clothes yourself. Your nurse can show you how to do this. It may help to have a family member or close friend with you so they can help you when you get home.
Kidney Transplant Surgery
Nurses at the hospital will arrange for you to see a practice nurse at your GP surgery or to see a district nurse at home. A nurse practitioner or district nurse will have a tube and change your dressing. They will also make sure you have enough drainage bags.
Before you go home, the nurse tells you who to contact if you are concerned that there is a problem with the nephrostomy. Contact them immediately if the tube breaks or stops urinating. You should also contact them immediately:
Your nephrostomy tube will be in the back. The pipe is attached to the drain bag. You usually wear the bag under your clothes and strap it to your thigh. Or you can have a bag that sticks to the skin over the tube.
It is important that you always keep the bag below the kidney. This helps to dry the urine (pee). At night, you can wear a larger drain bag that doesn’t need to be emptied until dawn.

Once you get home, you can go out as usual. Avoid sudden movements that could pinch the tube. At first, bending or climbing stairs can be uncomfortable. Place your hand over the nephrostomy when you have to move, if you feel any discomfort. This can prevent pipe pulling. It may take some time to find the perfect sleeping position.
It’s natural to worry about dealing with nephrostomy at home. With help and support, people often get used to it. Here are some important things to keep in mind:
Having a nephrostomy can affect the way you feel about your body (body image). Some people feel embarrassed and uncomfortable with other people who see it. These feelings are a natural part of learning to cope with nephrostomy. They usually get better over time.
If you are still having trouble solving this problem, ask your GP or hospital doctor for help.
