I got a call from a family who had a wild honey bee hive on the eve of their house! I had no experience removing wild bee hives and the thought of climbing a 10 foot ladder and removing a hive myself scared the life out of me! How To Get Rid From Honey Bees?

Zip tied comb to our Top Bar Goldstar Honey Bee hive. If you have a langstrot hive, you can tie the comb with a rubber band. Look at the picture, the source is from Einstein’s bee farm.

A side note about placing the crest on the top strips. I do not recommend a zip tie comb that is very heavy and dark. The bees will attach it to the bars, but the new wax cannot support the heavy comb. You will not be able to work with your hive at all. Heavy dark comb will fall from the top bars, use Langstrough hives if you are removing a bee colony that has been there for a long time. You’ll know they’ve been there a long time if the wax is very black and heavy. They won’t be very new wax (it’s light yellow). Don’t ask me how I know that. It was a painful lesson.

If a property owner suspects that a colony of honey bees has entered the wall of a structure, he/she should try to confirm that the insects are indeed honey bees. Other possible insects that can invade the walls of structures are carpenter bees, yellow jackets or European hornets. Honey bees range in color from yellow to black, have black or brown bands on their abdomens, and are much smaller than the carpenter bee. Honey bees are about 2/3 of an inch long and their bodies are covered in bristles or hairs. Foraging honey bees will have pollen baskets on each hind leg, which will often be loaded with a ball of yellow or dark green pollen. The honey bee is the only stinging insect that can normally overwinter as a colony in the wall of a building in South Carolina.

The carpenter bee can be recognized by bright yellow, orange or white hairs on the thorax and a black shiny abdomen on the dorsal side. Carpenter bees are robust, heavy-bodied bees that range from 3/4 to 1 inch in length. These insects bore half-inch-wide holes that appear perfectly round on exterior wood surfaces.

Yellow jackets do not have the dense body hair found in carpenter bees and honey bees. Yellow feeding jackets do not have pollen baskets on their hind legs. The yellow jacket is about 0.5 inches long and the abdomen is characterized by alternating yellow and black bands. European hornets are much larger (1.5 inches long) than honey bees and sometimes establish colonies inside structural walls.

NOTE: The property owner must first decide whether to hire a professional to do the work. Some beekeepers are very experienced in removing honey bees and will remove the bees for a fee, but sometimes a carpenter will be needed to help restore the wall.
