I’m not going to lie, my trainer writes my meal plans for me. I’m a dancer training for audition season, so sometimes I need that accountability… when I’m called out for my mistakes, I have fewer mistakes (I’m not a dieter, so it’s extremely difficult to stick to a specific meal plan (I only do it for the few months leading up to audition season, but I love my tacos. I’m all for a lifestyle change and having treats in moderation when I’m not prepping for auditions.) I have did his nutrition plan in preparation for auditions last year which I started in December 2018 and after the auditions were over I didn’t keep up with his exact meal plans but I did maintain healthier food choices and continued the good eating habits.

The photo below on the left is me in December 2018. I have always been skinny, but as you can see, I definitely have a belly dog. I’ve always struggled with gaining weight and keeping it off, but as soon as I started gaining the wrong kind of weight, it went straight to my gut. It always made me self-conscious and I tried so many ways to get rid of it but it didn’t work. However, back then I drank every weekend and ate too many desserts. But other than that, I was eating “healthy” but not “clean.”

The photo on the right was before I started my audition meal plan again in January 2020. There was about 8 months between finishing last year’s meal plan and starting over again this year. Even though I wasn’t sticking to a strict meal plan, I had made some major lifestyle changes, including a diet that included mostly fruits, vegetables, fish, organic animal protein, and much less alcohol (although I’m no longer a drinker). ), and much less desserts.

I’ve learned a lot over the past year and a half about how my body works and how to fuel it properly. I know what causes my lower belly fat and I know how to keep mine away. I know everyone’s body is different, but the tips I’m sharing are things I think you can use to be healthier overall and hopefully help you lose belly fat too!

How To Lose Belly Fat

I know this seems extreme and you’re probably saying to yourself, “One drink won’t hurt.” However, I always said the same thing: one drink hurt! Again, everyone’s body is different and for some people alcohol has no effect on belly fat, but if you’re reading this and have that daily glass of wine, or just go out for a few drinks with friends, then you’re probably not one of those people. So try not to drink alcohol for two weeks or even a month… I’m sure you won’t regret it.

I also occasionally had a glass of wine or a drink with friends, but after that one drink it was hard to turn down the other and once you’ve had that, you’re pressured to have another drink. If you don’t have a drink at all, it’s easier to turn it down when people offer you something to drink. And to add to that, if you only plan to have that one drink, why not have water or non-sweet iced tea? Most people claim that they don’t feel any different after one drink, so why worry about it at all? Why consume the calories and sugar?

I’ve noticed that when I go out, it’s not the absence of alcohol that feels uncomfortable… It’s not having a cup in my hand. So I just get water or unsweetened iced tea. And I’ve also noticed that not drinking makes other people more uncomfortable than me. Just some things to think about!

If it comes in a package or you don’t know what it was, don’t eat it. Stick to fruits, vegetables, nuts, organic (or at least antibiotic-free) meat, wild-caught fish, organic grains (like oats, quinoa, rice… not bread and pasta). Real food is easier to digest because you’re not trying to digest 30 ingredients at once.

My mentality is that God has given us all the food we need, in the form we need it. We’re not supposed to consume a lot of preservatives and processed foods. If you are a Christian or even curious about what the Bible says about what we should eat, be sure to look at Ezekiel 4:9 and Genesis 1:29. God gives some pretty specific instructions about what foods we should eat!

You can season your food with spices such as salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, ginger, cinnamon, basil, parsley, etc. You get where I’m going with this. No artificial flavors and limit natural flavors. (In my opinion, artificial and natural flavors are the food world’s version of fragrance. Behind those words can be countless ingredients and you don’t know what those ingredients are.) You don’t need a ton of spices with MSG and high fructose corn syrup to make your food tasty. let it taste!

Or severely limit it to a few times a month. Again, I know this seems extreme, but if you’re craving that sweet dessert, it is possible to make it without refined sugar. Some great alternatives (to use in moderation, i.e. a few times a week, not a few times a day) are coconut sugar, coconut nectar, raw organic honey, organic maple syrup, date sugar, stevia, ripe bananas or applesauce. It’s an adjustment learning to bake with natural sugars and sweeteners, but remember: this is a LIFESTYLE CHANGE, not a quick fix diet!

Did you know that humans are the only mammals that drink milk after infancy and that we are the only mammals that drink the milk of another animal?! It is not natural to consume dairy. Babies are meant to drink their mother’s milk. Babies produce an enzyme called lactase, which helps break down lactose. Humans no longer produce lactase after the age of about 5 years. We, as adults, are not designed to digest milk! So many people suffer from gas, bloating, and other digestive issues and think it’s normal. It’s definitely not normal! And if you think you’ll be deficient in calcium if you don’t drink milk, that’s not the case! If you eat a well-balanced diet, you shouldn’t miss out on most nutrients, including calcium. There are much better, healthier sources of calcium (such as dark leafy greens). You don’t need dairy to get enough calcium!
