STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — It’s honeybee swarm season, according to Nick Rozak, Staten Island beekeeper and owner of Green Stinger Trading. Rozak keeps beehives in Stapleton, Rosebank, New Brighton and Port Richmond.

“They do not plan to stay in that location for more than a few days at most. Most of the bees you see are so bloated with honey and other resources that they cannot physically use their stingers or fly properly.”

Rozak says he — or any beekeeper — will safely remove the bees from your property and move them to a new home. “Don’t spray them and don’t call the exterminator,” he said. “If you call a good exterminator, they’ll call a beekeeper. If they’re not so good, they might try to kill them and charge you for it.”

Most of the world’s crops depend on honey bees and wild bees for pollination, so declines in both managed and wild bee populations raise concerns about food security.

“We all need to help restore bee populations and they need your help just as much as we need them to survive,” added Rozak. “In New York City, beekeepers try to remove all the swarms we can because there is so little natural habitat for them, the chances of them dying or moving to the attic or garage are very high.

“When a beekeeper applies for a NYC Beekeeping permit, we all agree to help remove this swarm. If you don’t call the beekeeper soon and the bees move into your walls and start building new hives, that’s a whole different removal that’s going to cost you.”

Honey bees are ‘super organisms’ that can only live in colonies, or hives. “Swarming is how honey bees create new hives,” Rozak said. “Once or twice a year a healthy hive will split in half, creating a new queen and sending the old queen away with half the bees to form a new hive elsewhere.

“Seeing swarms of honey bees in your neighborhood is a good sign that your environment is improving and the bees are healthy, the plants are healthy.”

According to Rozak, the location of the cluster is very random — usually in a tree. “But in Staten Island, it might be next to your house, on your car, bike or patio umbrella,” he said. “Once the beekeeper sees the swarm and decides on a safe location to work (ie, not on electrical wires or traffic lights), the beekeeper will set up a box and try to “shake” most of the bees into the box.

Once most of the bees are in the safe box, the beekeeper waits, sometimes until after sunset for all the scout bees to return so the bees can be transferred to the box as well. The bees will know that the queen bee has moved into the box and will naturally follow her in.

“When the Beekeeper feels that all the bees are in the box and not flying anymore, we will transport them and place them at a local bee farm,” said Rozak.
